| 1207347 | 2011-06-06 19:56:00 | At this stage it looks like we have achieved a zero road toll on the roads during the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend which ended at 6 am this morning. | Bobh (5192) | ||

| 1207349 | 2011-06-06 21:09:00 | Yeah, so is the trick to it to have such a huge level of debt, an economy in a cautious mode, and a very fine threshold on the fines? ie people are hurting too much to risk a fine? Petrol prices may have kept a few people at home, as did the weather. Or maybe all the lads who drive like dicks were all at home downloading Duke Nukem. |

| 1207351 | 2011-06-06 22:07:00 | Now we have set a record that can never be broken. Unless someone revives a corpse in the middle of the road. | CliveM (6007) | ||
| 1207352 | 2011-06-06 22:09:00 | you see that they are attributing the whole thing to the 4kmh tolerance to speeding? as if its from god himself? pats on the back all round chaps! sure it works well in theory - and it worked as well - im not denying that - but it made the weekend miserable for anyone wanting to actually get anywhere during 9am-9pm because you had a 80:20 ratio of scared drivers to competent drivers on the roads the %80 scared drivers were all out doing 75-80kmh on the highways fretting that they will get ended by a cop - and they were driving at 75-80kmh because "ooh i don't know if my speedo is accurate id better drive even slower just in-case its not right" so there would be bunches of up to 20 cars all bunched up with a few wanting to get past so they could actually drive at 100km\h and keep up a decent pace so then comes along a passing lane "good! i should be able to get past here!" but oh wait someone else pulled out and is passing the guy who is doing 75kmh at 76kmh! cause he doesn't want to get ended by the cop sitting at the end of the passing lane and hes scared and also has wild fear of a possible inaccuracy of his speedo and then takes up the whole passing lane to pass one car - ruining it for the other 18 cars behind him - making them angry and impatient and more willing to pass as fast as possible on really bad parts of the road where passing is a really bad idea and that's just the regular car drivers - that's not even mentioning the people in camper-vans or towing caravans or horses that were oblivious to the 30 or so cars behind them and when they did notice them didn't pull over because they had the whole "im driving safely at 60kmh on a highway so no one else needs to rush!" so i did all my long trips out of town from the hours 9PM to 9am making good pace while obeying the speed limits at all times - with the roof off for extra awesome to the point i even got pulled over for having the roof off as the cop thought i was on some sort of awesome drugs :D good times when the roads aren't full of people scared of the police! |

What you said would almost apply to the Masterton to Carterton straight any time. |

Normally (non long weekend) the traffic sits on about 105-110kph and flows nicely. This weekend was a shocker. There was one 35K stretch following a line of at least 20 cars at a variable 75-85K, all less than 3 car lengths apart. From the back of the queue, I set my cruise control and sat at a good distance back from the last car. It was amazing to watch the brake lights going on and off even though there was nothing to brake for, just the variations in the drivers abilities/concentrations. Still, it’s very pleasing that no families had to suffer from the loss of a loved one on the roads but I suspect it is a one off anomaly, rather than any particular strategy. Will the authorities put up their hand and accept blame if several people get killed on the roads next week? I think not. HH |

| 1207355 | 2011-06-06 23:18:00 | I noticed some time back that leaving Tokoroa for Wellington at around 2:00 am on the Saturday and leaving Wellington for Tokoroa around 9:00 pm on Monday worked for me. This when I was working. Now that I don't work I don't leave my house over the long weekends as a matter of principle. |

Before the chief tax collector pats herself on the back I wonder if she notice that the traffic this weekend was way down on other long weekends and the fuel price was up. We don't normally go away but this weekend we went from Auckland to Tauranga. coming back yesterday it was normal weekend traffic. No ques, no breathless live crosses to the holiday hiway showing long ques on TV last nite. Who wants to go away in the middle of winter when the weather is crap?? |
