1206727 2011-06-03 11:03:00 Hi Guys

Been stuck a home for damn near a month with a #@!%# Ulcer. To say it is sore and painful is an understatement. If you don't know what an ulcer is, go HERE. (en.wikipedia.org(dermatology))

Have to go to the Doctor or Nurse every two or three days to get the dressing changed.

You wouldn't believe how I got it. We have a F+P dishwasher and I used to leave the door open completely to dry the dishes. Hate to say it but the better half used to tell me it was "an accident waiting to happen". Like most blokes I knew better.

Anyway, I hit my leg on the sharp corner of the dishwasher door. Bugger me, two days later I did it again. Now you would think I would have learnt by experience, apparently not. Approximately a week later, I did it again!! The damn thing is real slow to heel and now it's an Ulcer.

Each time it hurt like hell. Old Rod Steward used to say the first cut is the deepest. I can tell you he's wrong - the third cut ripped a nerve.

Now I'm basically sitting at home bored sh#@less and sucking in pain killers.
After all, you can only watch so many dvd's or tv. I'm a keen gardener but can't risk getting dirt or compost into the wound so that's a no-no at the moment. I do go out at times.

At work, I used to think it would be cool if I could take time off, relax and chill out.

To quote a famous person, can't remember who, Peace and quite can be heaven or it can be hell.

Still as the Wife constantly reminds me, I've only got myself to blame.

1206728 2011-06-03 11:29:00 I feel for you. My now ( dead ) wife had one of those which required packing regularly by the District nurse. It was not the ulcer that killed her in an effort to make you feel better but it was about 4 months before fully healed. Hers was around 15 mm deep.

It was about 1978 then though and I believe there have been advances made since in treatment methods I hope.

1206729 2011-06-03 11:47:00 Hah, didn't know you can get them externally on your skin. The ulcers I used to regularly have were in my mouth - cheek walls, under and top of tongue, lips.....at one point I had 11 ulcers in my mouth. Can hardly swallow liquid! qazwsxokmijn (102)
1206730 2011-06-03 11:47:00 Hi Snorkbox

Thanks for your concern . Sorry to hear about your Wife .

If there has been advances in treatment, I waiting to see them . To be fair everything that could be done has been done . Next Tuesday Morning got to go for a Doppler Test . Thought it had something to do with radar or speedguns . It actually measures bloodflow with soundwaves .

A blood flow check is probably a good idea. I think they try to heal more from the outside these days but I'm not sure.

A pdf has been sent to your email address. I hope it helps.

1206733 2011-06-03 12:29:00 Hi Guys

Eleven ulchers in your mouth, ouch and no thank you!! Only got one on my leg and that's enough for a lifetime.

Magnesium Sulphate Paste is what the nurses are applying under the dressing to, in their words, draw the pus up. Yuck.

1206734 2011-06-03 14:57:00 If anyone here remembers Job from the Bible - well he was 'sitting in the ashes' in ulcer city with oozing pustules and crusty scabs all over his body .

The story goes on from there - but suffice it to say that one of the by-products of burnt wood - the 'ashes' here in this reference - produces a weak version of potassium permanganate .

Job's 'sitting' in the ashes was telling that although his contrite condition is usually surmised as his reason for sitting there like burnt refuse, it was the healing properties of the ashes themselves that really counted .

That same purple reagent available in our drug stores and you apothecaries is fantastic for healing and cleaning external skin ulcerations .

I have used it on people to destroy ring worm and also to treat my tropical fish for parasites, as a fungicidal and for curing cotton mouth diseases .

They MAY limit the unlicensed or non-prescribed sale to a small quantity, since it can be used to make some high explosives however .

I also believe that it is used extensively in Europe to treat water and wash vegetables and fruits like we do with chlorine in the US - so it is safe enough for topical application to extrapolate from that .

Let's ask Jamuz . Hello? Jamuz?

1206735 2011-06-03 15:18:00 I remember getting mouth ulcers as a child but these are totally different to leg ulcers which may burrow really deep.

My Mother used a paint brush ( artists ) to apply Gentian violet as it was called then in the '50s.

See here:-

Yeep. Just saw that smoking cessation can cause mouth ulcers which gives me another reason not to quit!!

1206736 2011-06-03 20:18:00 IMHO bandaging an ulcer like this is not the way to heal it, leave it open to the air and spread Mag Sulph with a little finger, not too much, just keep putting on a bit every few hours, wipe seeping with a tissue.

You can get a pot of Mag Sulph from Chemist shop about $8.

Mag Sulph is what heroin addicts use to cure needle ulcers, it definitely works for this job.

I had a ulcer in a place that shall remain un-named, would not heal, went to doctor plenty of times, more than one, tried everything, nothing fixed it, read about Mag Sulph in a novel about drug addicts, tried it, fixed in four days after months of suffering useless treatments.
