If the bank makes a mistake they will take it back. If you make a mistake then it is your problem. If you key in a wrong account number then you have in effect authorised the bank to make a payment to that account. The bank does not have the power to reverse payment. There is no check in the banks computer system to verify that the account number is compatible with the account name. The money was eventually returned. This is all covered under the Judicature Act 1908. This Act appears to be under review and submissions closed on 1 June 2011. |

| 1208349 | 2011-06-10 23:36:00 | Are you sure they don't do any account name cross-checking? I'm sure I've had a payment I made rejected because the bank account number and the payee name didn't match. According to the Fair Go programme (tvnz.co.nz) the bank cannot do the check because this is sharing information. This does sound ridiculous. Most times, when I set up a new payee to make bill payments to, I find that I am able to search on the bank's web page for the firm that I want to make payments to. This is easier and safer than keying in the account. At least, I can blame the bank if the number is wrong, provided I select the correct firm. |

| 1208351 | 2011-06-11 02:18:00 | I've always made up the account names, but I've also always triple checked the account number. Making up account names is quite amusing. Quite. Very amusing. I'm often amused by myself. | Growly (6) | ||

Have they managed to catch the male absconder to the woman who handed herself in ?. Lurking. |
