2011-06-10 11:53:00 | Just a thread out of curiosity... Following the earthquake I have made 2 claims (approx 10k worth) Legit claims, we suffered major damage to the house we were renting and moved out and lost a lot of contents to silt and gravity. What I am planning to do once the money finally comes is pay off credit card, which has gotten out of control (and recently been cut up) and spent the rest on a few other things. The items damaged weren't all necessary and to be honest I have no intention on replacing a few of them because the money could be spent on better things. Is this morally right? Im lucky enough to be in a position where I could replace things I needed/wanted like sound system for lounge and tv but I can't help but feel I'm ripping off the EQC by effectively gaining from the earthquake. I assume once I get the money I am free to do with it what I want but surely getting me debt free isn't one of the things the money is supposed to be used for? Just curious as to what you guys would do in my position... sidenote. I think that EQC should really speed things up, I am not too worried about when my money comes because I do not "need" it urgently but I really do feel sorry for those who have lost necessities that they can't afford to replace and won't get their money until around December. Seems a bit unfair.

2011-06-10 11:57:00 | If you need a moral justification, then you could argue that you would possibly have sold the items concerned (before the earthquake) to pay off your credit card bill. In a way, you're just eliminating that step. | somebody (208) | |
2011-06-10 11:59:00 | That's true I guess. I just look at the position that alot of people are in and I will definitely be better off because of it all. Ignoring the hassles of it all of course. I'm the sort of person who hates handouts, the only thing I willingly accept is a beer!

2011-06-10 20:33:00 | Just a thread out of curiosity . . . Following the earthquake I have made 2 claims (approx 10k worth) Legit claims, we suffered major damage to the house we were renting and moved out and lost a lot of contents to silt and gravity . What I am planning to do once the money finally comes is pay off credit card, which has gotten out of control (and recently been cut up) and spent the rest on a few other things . The items damaged weren't all necessary and to be honest I have no intention on replacing a few of them because the money could be spent on better things . Is this morally right? Just curious as to what you guys would do in my position . . . You can do what ever you like with the money, go on a world cruise if you wanted to, ECQ don't and won't care . As far as they are concerned, the money for your damaged goods, whether you want to replace those items or not has been paid . We still haven't been accessed from the Sept shake and suffered further damage and loss of contents in Feb . The whole process is a shambles . Some people have got lucky and had quick assessments and pay outs, some have had very generous pay payouts, others have been offered less than value of damage .

2011-06-10 22:40:00 | You could make a donation to some family who is a lot worse off than you, or to the SPCA or another charity. anonymously of course. It is good that you have a sense of morality. not like some. LL

2011-06-10 23:02:00 | You have experienced a genuine loss of personal effects some of which may have been surplus to your requirements and therefore sold for cash. You would also have lost essential equipment. What you do with the money is your business. Paying off your credit card would be sensible. | Bobh (5192) | |
2011-06-11 00:14:00 | In claiming for the losses. You aren't doing like so many and claiming for things you didn't have in the first place, so you can sleep peacefully. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2011-06-11 01:15:00 | Thanks guys, I thought I was on the right track but it just feels odd having money given to me . Ive never claimed anything insurance ever so its all new . We still haven't been accessed from the Sept shake and suffered further damage and loss of contents in Feb . Have you tried calling them every day? I know of a few people who had to call again and again even for weeks until they get someone come out . It seems houses over the $115k mark also get there contents paid at the same time . Where as according to their last report we will be waiting until december for contents only claims to be processed :(
