1208410 2011-06-13 03:23:00 It's about time the governments and big business really put the funding into finding a proper alternative to oil and I don't mean biofuel . I mean how long have we had the combustion engine 130 years? surely some scientist could find a replacement type of propulsion by now

There is a multitude of alternatives out there, but if any of your recall what happened the last three times that the Water Engine was supposedly found? But that's a whole other thread .

Unfortunately until a more viable source of friction removal/reduction is found OIL will always be required if only as a lubricant .

Remember too that oil isn't used only as fuel . Many many things are made from it, including pharmaceuticals . It would be good to know it was there though, for future wealth when required, perhaps when safer methods of extraction are available . Then NZ would be able to negotiate a deal to retain much of the wealth created in this country, and hold all the other bastards to ransom for a change .

Safer methods of extraction - I think if any country is going to find a safer method, It will be kiwi's . Maybe we could be the first country in the world to build a sub-aquatic station on the sea floor and use a Mag-Rail system for transport?

Mostly by burning coal or oil . That is actually a lot less efficient than using the same fuel in a petrol/diesel engine . Also until someone can produce efficient battery technology cheaply for mass use electric motors are not much use in cars for the general public . Current 'green' vehicles are very expensive and are not in fact very green anyway .

Not so true, The wind farms my not look to hot but design a better turbine? incorporate Solar and or Tidal generation? You could green and entire country with the right tools .

Do a retro job and go back to steam driven . :)

Funny you should mention that - LINK ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/File:EuroDishSBP_front . jpg" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org)

We just need to find something that will remove oil from the equation after all the technology is ancient

Yes it is an old technology, I don't think the new technology is too far away I think its more of a when will we be ready for it .

So what are you trying to say Bladez?

If a viable oil field is discovered, we will be paid a royalty per barrel . But the cost of fuel will still follow the international price .

Actually no, If the price of fuel is so high because there is a lack of oil, or lack of transportation - pulling the Oil out, shipping it half way around the world and then getting it shipped back here as a usable product? Don't think that would bring the price down . If we want any control over our own futures then as a country we need to step into the right role .

For those that say New Zealand Doesn't have enough Money to do it? We don't have enough Not too . Has anyone even ran the numbers to see what it would cost? Must be worth doing if Oil companies will transport their rig's half way round the world to get it and then ship it .

Doesn't that mean that it would be cheaper to do it ourselves?

Could you not use the hot air that is put into the atmosphere by all of the worlds politicians? What a novel way of power your steam car that would be, hook up a politician to the boiler instead of a firebox :devil

Although a great Idea - they already sleep on the Job as it is - adding another item they can charge us for would just be silly :D

1208411 2011-06-13 03:23:00 Wasnt Marsden Point an Oil refinery?...I think its a great idea.....however we should be 50/50 partners with whoever else....
As for oil spills, there has been only 1 I know of from deep water mining, the rest were all tanker spills...

1208412 2011-06-13 03:31:00 Nice post Bladez but you forgot one factor (two actually) the greens and the Maoris

EDIT: Correct Sol, they have been drilling off shore in NZ for decades

Not even ow !! :D

Green party understand that the more money the country can make from its exports the more time they have to grow their futures.

As for the Maoris? Apparently its outside the area of control cause, like da bro-matua said. "As far as the eye can see" If they want a share of it then when it comes ashore they can earn their part just like the rest of us.

Yes but as I stated earlier it can't refine the grade of oil from NZ.

1208415 2011-06-13 09:05:00 Let’s see, why don’t we drill and sell all our oil, (impossible, we have that much), mine all our precious metals (impossible we have that much) and be in a position to enjoy our position if the perpetual motion machine ever becomes available. (which it won’t)

Guy’s, we are the richest country in the world, but sadly deficient in brains. :crying
