1208059 2011-06-15 00:41:00 Do they have compulsory Aborigine language classes for kids in Australia?

Do their teachers have to learn the Aborigine language (to any sort of level, let alone tertiary level) before they can stand in front of a class?

Not bloody likely, and any politician who suggested it, let alone suggested making it compulsory, would be looking for a real job come the next election.

This bullshit only pervades successfully in NZ, because the silent majority let it happen.
Maybe they should start being a bit more publicly activist in their response to these crackpot ideas.

1208060 2011-06-15 01:58:00 Seems that kids have enough problems learning English these days. Some kids in the MILs classes (11 and 12 year olds) still cant read properly. Maybe they should get the basics right first. Barnabas (4562)
1208061 2011-06-15 02:10:00 Your daughter is probably not much of a teacher then. Learning a few greetings in all the languages of your class is I'd have thought an obvious thing to do as a courtesy to your students. Really it is irrelevant what the race of your class is, and playing "spot the white face" would suggest she picked up a few racist tendencies from you or more likely you're misrepresenting what your daughter actually said.

My daughter is an excellent and very well respected teacher of many years experience. I resent you saying otherwise.

"Spot the white face" is meant as a joke - a joke shared by all the teachers at her school. It is a relavant comment as there are more coloured faces than white and is not intended as a racist remark. It is fact. Unfortunately, some people - such as yourself - can't understand the meaning of a joke.

It is interesting though, is it not, that people, such as yourself, love expressing righteous indignation on behalf of other people, particularly maori, thinking that people will respect you for that action. My experience tells me that minority cultures, and there are many of them in this country, do not appreciate your brand of righteous indignation. Many feel that they can stand up for themselves and do not require those that think themselves do gooders, to stand up for them. Allow these people to stand on their own two feet. Why don't you take your PC rubbish elsewhere?:angry

Again this is just another imposition on teachers. Most have more than enough to do: teach, social work, sport/drama/music coaching, preparation, marking, meetings, parents meetings, National Standards, NCEA moderation and assessment: this list of items goes on.

Your remarks have hit the mark. Most teachers leave school an hour or two after the pupils have left, doing a myriad of jobs. Many then continue working when they arrive home.

Thanks for your support. Also thanks to Zipperty, Cato, mikebartnz and Strommer. There seems to be more support against making maori compulsory than there is for, which is encouraging and not suprising. English is the language of New Zealand and is the only language that should be compulsory.

1208062 2011-06-15 09:17:00 Using Maori as a working language has a major hurdle to overcome. The example of the Treaty of Waitangi will cast a long shadow over any future nonsense of this nature. It appears that the meaning of the two versions are further apart than the quran and the bible - not that I have any truck with either, enough deaths already. R2x1 (4628)
1208063 2011-06-15 09:31:00 Absolute crap. She is there to give the students an education that can be useful in their lives, not play the courtesy game.

explain folk dancing?

Nope you got that wrong, don't consider myself a do-gooder at all and in fact was just yanking your chain. In my experience racists respond with righteous indication when they get called out on it. You certainly did, having a good laugh at your over reaction right now. I do love the racist rationalisation you give though, especially as I doubt you ever talk to the minority cultures you claim share your views. Why don't you take you racist views somewhere else? :)

1208066 2011-06-16 12:32:00 All of the "minorities" that I know are ashamed of those that claim to speak for them and do not in any way want to be associated with the bullshit.

Of course I don't spend time with criminal, lazy or racist scum who would benefit from a life of sucking on the tax payers tit based on their shade of skin.

Why nominate yourself as useless and incapable?

Its pathetic and weak.

So you're saying racist scum of certain skin colours would benefit from sucking on the tax payer. :stare::stare::stare:
