| 1208040 | 2011-06-10 02:23:00 | Your daughter is probably not much of a teacher then. Learning a few greetings in all the languages of your class is I'd have thought an obvious thing to do as a courtesy to your students. ♥ Whoa bro. Where's the love? |

| 1208041 | 2011-06-10 02:29:00 | www.stuff.co.nz Wonders when Mandarin will be compulsory. :) Makes more sense than Maori. How many Maori can actually speak, understand - or better yet, care to know their native language? Most immigrants seem to know their native language for a generation or three after coming to NZ... Maybe for the meantime we should just focus on teaching one (english, that is) language, adequately. |

So perhaps try learning that instead of trying to be too nice. I say this, because listen to your average Maori murdering the language and you want to respect them, apart from the fact that they want to force people to speak their language. |

She is there to give the students an education that can be useful in their lives, not play the courtesy game. |

No doubt the frequent application of corporal punishment for anyone who steps out of line is what a real education is about. Hardly surprising really that racists find no value in learning a few words of the Maori language, too busy playing "spot the white face" it would seem. As I said previously, don't agree with compulsory Maori language training for teachers but treating a multi-cultural class room as if one approach fits all is idiotic. |

I agree with you Mike but unfortunately public education in NZ is so much about being politically correct. This comes from politicians kissing the a** of their local sh** stirrers in order to get votes. Do you remember Don Brash's Orewa speech? That was one time a politician chose not to be PC, but then Brash went on to be a dickhead with the likes of the Bretheren, etc. Egad, if I was a teacher and was forced to take Maori classes, I would have a lot of resentment. Teachers put up with a huge amount of crap from students, parents and the MOE already. Forcing Maori lessons on teachers may be enough to make even more teachers leave the profession. |
