O K Thanks. PJ

1235356 2011-10-04 07:15:00 Thats what I was thinking of. Is whatever is in the hidden partition the same as what is on a Disc of W7? PJ Should be. But it also includes the drivers for whatever. Its in an ISO (which you have to / should burn). Hopefully before it dies on you Speedy Gonzales (78)
1235357 2011-10-04 08:00:00 Windows 7 these days from the Name Brand manufactures does not contain a ISO file in the recovery partition.

I posted this the other day for some info:

Windows 7 or a factory recovery doesn't have an ISO file anymore, it uses whats called a WIM file -- while similar its also quite different. If you were to open the Recovery Partition of a name brand PC, you would see several files including install.WIM,Factory named.WIM, ImageX.exe -- this along with various other files is what installs the OS/WIM file.

While you can simply copy out the Main WIM file, you then need to boot from a WinPE CD, and run ImageX ( all command Prompt) to install, there is also a answer file in the recovery partition, or embedded in the factory.WIM file that allows the partitions to be created by diskpart as per original other wise you have to create partitions manually first.

Note: factory.WIm means what ever the manufacture calls the file. Could be the model number or the company name, Eg: dell.WIM

Example attached screen shot is a Dell WIM file I saved once, along with the model etc. I had to manually install the OS from the WIM file as the HDD was knackered and couldn't be cloned to run it normally.

1235359 2011-10-04 18:16:00 I always buy the OEM version now, and when I upgrade I tend to buy a new copy and sell the old one with the old pc. It adds some value to what you're selling and avoids any hassles activating.
Although I have been left with a collection of old OEM disks from when I've kept the PC, currently I have 2 copies of vista, 1 XP pro x64, and 1 XP home disk floating around doing nothing.
