1208474 2011-06-12 12:21:00 Had a similar situation last month. Somehow the neighbor had hacked into our wireless and was downloading games. Changed the router, password and username, back to normal now. If you have a close neighbors, check it out. mzee (3324)
1208475 2011-06-12 12:33:00 I have recently installed Networx on all my machines, and it can be told to dis-count all local traffic which is good.
And its free.

1208476 2011-06-12 13:54:00 ideas?
things to check?
i just cant beleive we have used this much when we have been home less than normal and we not near the end of the month yet....... only about halfway......

First thing I'd do would be a virus/malware/rootkit scan (and possibly a Hijackthis scan (and post it's result here)).
Then check whether high usage is due to downloading streaming video (youtube, TVNZ TV progs, video news etc) or radio, or Skype (or even stuff from torrent sites/Frostwire, kids are quite likely to do this, not realising the consequences (high data usage(down and upload!)/viruses/illegal). The last two items (Skype/Frostwire) can consume data if you leave them running in the background.
Also if you have a wireless broadband modem (as mentioned before), turn the wireless off if you're not using it, or if you are, set a password and turn encryption on (WPA2 if poss) so no-one unauthorised can use/steal your internet access/data.

1208477 2011-06-12 21:33:00 Ok im just off to work so will get back to you on the scan, but alas the wireless and password bit is way above my knowledge i dont know how to do that . . . . . . will need complete and easy instructions on how to do it from the start . . . . . . . to end result .

thank you for your input have given me some ideas and yes have very close neigbours, on either side, and even tho i dont know one lot at all theres always they possibility .

ive only had BB since december so its still in the newbie stage for me, but i was certain 10 would be heaps for us, weve never got this high a useage before . . . . . . lol i want to be safe rather than sorry . . . lol

1208478 2011-06-13 00:46:00 Beetle, i started with a 5Gb plan (still cant believe that), then moved to 15Gb, then that wasn't enough so went to 25Gb, now i am on a 40Gb plan and still end up on dial up for a few days/weeks. Now slingshot have doubled my data to 80Gb....will see how that goes

Sometimes if budgeting you just have to say, well dial up it is, until the month is over. Deal with it.

EDIT: it can be an interesting thing to check out where it is all going, but TUC and networx as suggested above work well for me

1208479 2011-06-13 03:02:00 The thing with broadband is that it's very easy to use a lot of banwidth quickly. A couple hours watching HD videos on youtube can burn a few gigs easily.

And as more and more people get broadband the websites start to add more animation etc to make the websites look good - which all adds to the usage.

At 10G a month personally I would have to limit myself to E-mail and light surfing or I'd risk blowing it.

Does the above (in bold) mean that you currently don't have any security? If so, that may be the source of the missing allowance - somebodies connecting to your internet connection .

Nope, not dumb - you should have heard me swear the first time I set up my router. Got there eventually with the kind help of the folks here.
