1208380 2011-06-11 23:23:00 Remember too that oil isn't used only as fuel. Many many things are made from it, including pharmaceuticals. It would be good to know it was there though, for future wealth when required, perhaps when safer methods of extraction are available. Then NZ would be able to negotiate a deal to retain much of the wealth created in this country, and hold all the other bastards to ransom for a change. Richard (739)
1208381 2011-06-12 00:17:00 Oil and the internal combustion engine are so last century, lets face it the days of cheap oil are long gone if they were ever really here at all. It's about time the governments and big business really put the funding into finding a proper alternative to oil and I don't mean biofuel. I mean how long have we had the combustion engine 130 years? surely some scientist could find a replacement type of propulsion by now

True, due for engine replacement. I guess oil companies have influence in world markets, and economics, automotive manufacturer's.

Maybe time for electric/electronic motor. I have been researching US winches (e.g. Warn (www.warn.com) Industries, Smitybilts, etc), and their electric motors, for my new blog. Always upgrading/enhancing them (seems weekly)- e.g. series wound, and permanent magnets and their planetary drive-trains. Tons of well spec'd electric motors. Why not transfer this technology to consumer car engines? I don't know - maybe a bank of series wound motors under the hood for a car. Oil industry has global control I guess, thus limiting consumers to the plain jane combustion engines.

1208382 2011-06-12 00:52:00 A problem with electric motors which is never seems to be considered is that you have to produce the electricity somehow before you can use it. Mostly by burning coal or oil. That is actually a lot less efficient than using the same fuel in a petrol/diesel engine. Also until someone can produce efficient battery technology cheaply for mass use electric motors are not much use in cars for the general public. Current 'green' vehicles are very expensive and are not in fact very green anyway. CliveM (6007)
1208383 2011-06-12 01:18:00 Um if process oil is refining it what is that big chimney you can see just outta Ruakaka
The trouble is it can't refine the oil that comes from NZ because of the grade.
Came across this site (www.innovationnewsdaily.com) yesterday which sounds interesting.

Fixed that for you.

The oldies may be leading the way with their mobility scooters. The power supply is deep cycle battery which can easily be recharged from mains power. Batteries must need to be replaced every few years. Hopefully in the future, longer lasting and more efficient batteries will be available.

The Electric Bike Hub (www.electricbikehub.co.nz)has an advertisement in the Grey Power magazine. It claims to use Lithium batteries (electronics.howstuffworks.com). Maybe more research and development of Lithium batteries (or similar) may be the way to go.

1208386 2011-06-12 04:20:00 Notice I didn't say anything about electric vehicles as they are definitely not the way forward. I said it's about time they tried finding a real alternative to oil gary67 (56)

We could go back to using whale oil......www.petroleumhistory.org
