1208029 2011-06-09 22:42:00 I am not interested in learning the Maori language but I am quite often interested in learning the origins of Maori place names. This can be got from a Maori dictionary over the Internet. Bobh (5192)
1208030 2011-06-09 22:46:00 I think the idea to have compulsory Maori language training is idiotic, but that doesn't mean learning a little Maori is idiotic.

Languages should be a matter of choice but in a multi-cultural society I think learning a few words in Maori is a good thing. I have had to speak on marae in an official capacity and knowing a few introductory words certainly helped.

Doesn't seem so much use for it in IT, too busy learning acronyms.

1208032 2011-06-10 00:05:00 Why is that then? A well known greeting in an official New Zealand language.

Unlike Englush, whatever that is.

Please do not try to cram the Maori language/culture down my throat.

I'd rather learn Latvian.

I'm not trying to cram (or ram for that matter) anything down your throat. I can't understand why you would react that way to a few words of a common greeting in Maori. What Latvian has to do with New Zealand I'm not sure but by all means learn whatever you want.

1208034 2011-06-10 00:36:00 My daughter is a teacher. She needs to know a small amount of maori although what for, she is not certain.

She tells me that maori in today's schools is unrealistic. Many different races and ethnic groups abound in today's schools and maoris (and European) are very much in the minority.

After the school photographs are taken, the teachers show each other their class photograph and they play a game called, "Spot the white face," and very few of the coloured faces, if any, are maori.

So what is the point? Why learn maori? Why learn a dead language? It is of no use to anyone. What an absolute waste of time and resources. Much better off learning a European language. At least you should be able to make some use of that.

Your daughter is probably not much of a teacher then. Learning a few greetings in all the languages of your class is I'd have thought an obvious thing to do as a courtesy to your students. Really it is irrelevant what the race of your class is, and playing "spot the white face" would suggest she picked up a few racist tendencies from you or more likely you're misrepresenting what your daughter actually said.

I think we could probably agree English should be compulsory. If you want another language then book yourself into a school that teaches it I say.
