| 1236430 | 2011-10-09 01:49:00 | Doubtless this has been discussed but I couldn't find a thread. My daughter heads off to Otago university in a few months and we plan to buy her a laptop. As to which one, I'll need advice but that isn't yet urgent. Right now I can't work out if a 64bit system is any advantage. My daughter mainly uses a pc for Facebook and Graham Norton clips etc. :D Plus writing assignments, normal non-geek stuff. She isn't into gaming apart from flash games online. I'm conscious its easy for a laptop to get stolen or damaged in a student environment so would a basic machine be fine? What do people think? Cheers |

| 1236434 | 2011-10-09 02:29:00 | If it can run 64bit (ie 2gb ram or better) put 64bit on it. | icow (15313) | ||

More often then not something will not work properly on a 64bit system :) Most probably it will be fixable but that takes time/effort. 4gb of ram will also be plenty if it's only used for assignments/internet. This is speaking from experience and based on what I've found with clients computers. |
