1235675 2011-10-06 06:53:00 Having another go at the linux game cos my laptop needs a format and I want to use my windows key on my desktop.

I have no DVD's and my DVD drive is at the mrs place so want to install from usb flash drive. Ive googled and tried a few things but can't see any way that I'm capable of doing. I have tried using fedoras tool but that spat an error at me. And Unetbooting didn't work either.

Any suggestions?

1235676 2011-10-06 08:19:00 I find the process of preparing a boot pen drive does not always work. I use Unetbootin - but sometimes you have to make the disk more than once to get it to work.

It is also worth double checking that you have set the correct boot order in the CMOS settings - that has caught me before.

1235677 2011-10-06 08:22:00 I can boot off it, I just couldnt install, said something about a missing directory?? hueybot3000 (3646)
1235678 2011-10-06 08:24:00 Then I think it is worth trying to make the pen drive image again. johnd (85)
1235679 2011-10-06 08:40:00 K doing that now.

What does Unetbootin actually do? I mean I could just copy the iso contents onto the pen drive and shouldnt that boot?

1235680 2011-10-06 08:46:00 From www.make-bootable-disks.com

"For the Live USB creation mode, UNetbootin downloads and extracts an ISO file to your USB drive, generates an appropriate syslinux config file, and makes your USB drive bootable using syslinux".

1235681 2011-10-06 08:49:00 Well that makes sense to me, except I have no idea what the config file would be for. Wouldn't that be generated on install? hueybot3000 (3646)
1235682 2011-10-06 08:51:00 No because I think it is part of what makes the pen drive boot. johnd (85)
1235683 2011-10-06 09:15:00 Got invalid or corrupt image this time. Think my image is stuffed. Will download again hueybot3000 (3646)
