1208924 2011-06-13 07:55:00 Stephen Fry is trying to re-write history as he re-writes "The Dambusters (www.stuff.co.nz)".

Some will be able to guess what it's about.

Is there anyone here that was alive at the time it happened?

1208925 2011-06-13 08:06:00 Yep more PC BS. Niger is Latin for the color black so the name is appropriate.. paulw (1826)
1208926 2011-06-13 08:18:00 Yep ... just watched it and agree with the last living survivor of those missions ... don't muck with history and think he was right on the money when he said he would never have even thought about using the word "niger" as a derogatory term for any human being.

Unfortunately, there are those out there who have/do use the word in the wrong context and have made it a PC time bomb. Having said that, Stephen Fry has come up with a close and appropriate alternative.

1208927 2011-06-13 08:25:00 Its not like its being used as any sort of racial slur or put down, if someone was galled "gay" as in short for Gabriel and it got changed there would be an enormous outcry.

Unless some group of black people have an issue with the fact a black dog is called niger then yes, they have a right to state that. Otherwise its just all the white politicians hiding the fact the RAF had a dog with a name now associated with racial slurs that we want to keep hidden in our past.

1208928 2011-06-13 08:50:00 When there are so many other things going on at the moment, this seems an extremely trivial matter.
Just call the bloody dog Digger and get over it.
It's not as if the name contributes in anyway whatsoever to the story. It could be called Murgatroyd for all that it matters.

1208929 2011-06-13 08:53:00 Same could be said about Churchill & Hitler ... but history tells us differently. SP8's (9836)
1208930 2011-06-13 08:58:00 While on the subject, the word "Gay" means "happy, jolly, bright, decorated, cheerful" certainly has nothing to do with Homosexuality. I hate it when an arrogant section of the community claims a word as their own. Nothing wrong with "Homo"! mzee (3324)

That's not without its problems:
"1.
a. A person or animal that digs: a digger of gardens; a digger for information.
b. A tool or machine used for digging or excavating.
2. Informal
a. A soldier from Australia in World War I and World War II.
b. A soldier from New Zealand in World War I.
3. also Digger or Digger Indian Offensive Used as a disparaging term, especially in the 19th century, for a member of any of various Native American peoples of the Great Basin, such as the Utes, Paiutes, and Western Shoshones.
[Sense 3, from their use of digging sticks as foraging tools.]"

1208932 2011-06-13 09:14:00 The Dogs name was NIGGER and that’s the end of it.

Are we supposed to rewrite history to appease the politically correct???

1208933 2011-06-13 09:16:00 Blimey, he (Peter Jackson) had better not do a film about the superfortress that dropped the atomic Bomb on Japan near the end of WW2.

Wonder what they would call the Plane ??? -- obviously cant use its REAL name (en.wikipedia.org) -- That would offend to many people as well I suppose, since it wouldn't be to PC -- and what about the code-name they gave they bomb, to PC as well maybe ???
