1209489 2011-06-21 02:21:00 Without a doubt, you are right. However, given the choice, I would personally prefer not to learn either.

If I'm going to hinder my future or my career because of it, then so be it, but something like that should be optional IMO!

1209490 2011-06-21 02:22:00 "IMNSHO" new acronym :) In my not so humble opinion, compulsory Mandarin would be more useful than compulsory Maori for many students as we now have a free trade agreement with China, but not with maori.

Fixed that for you Snork :)

Pretty much we agree in so far as in we can lead a horse to water but we can't make it drink.

Therefore I would suggest that making any language other than English compulsory in NZ may be counter productive and only lead to more resentment.

I fully agree that Te Reo can and should be promoted but only for those that want to learn it. I do note that many jobs advertised in NZ have a requirement of Te Reo Maori and good luck to those that get work because of their fluency.

I was aware that there was already an acronym for that one. :)

Can anyone translate that to Te Reo or Mandarin?

1209495 2011-06-22 07:31:00 English is compulsory, but a translator is still necessary for a rather high percentage of job applicants that have passed the whole of their miserable existence here. Making any other language compulsory for these misfits would presumably be equally futile. R2x1 (4628)
1209496 2011-06-22 14:02:00 Sign language is an offical language in NZ, thought I might try that instead of Te Maori, but the computer didnt respond when I tried, I'll just stick to Engrish and keyboard. :D Iantech (16386)

Gestures? yep, someone gave me one today, he was in a van doing 45 in a 60 zone and seemed to get upset when I passed him doing 60. Hate that ! Sorry, gone way off topic now. Cheers:D
