You do for a GST return but not an IR3. It is really simple and I find it hard to understand why anyone would pay someone else to do it. Before you start you need to know your gross earnings and how much PAYE you have paid. Then just fill out the form online and if you provide an account number your refund is paid into the bank in short order. You fill out the form as a draft so if you do not like what it says you do not have to submit it to IRD unless you are self employed. PAYE payers do not have to submit a return unless they have income in addition to normal PAYE deducted wages. If you follow the IRD link in my post and press the start button, you will see that DLN is the second item down. Directly beneath the label is a word that strikes fear in the hearts of mere mortals attempting to file an online return: "Required". Disclaimer: Since I am self-employed and use an accountant I have no experience of this form personally. You certainly do need a DLN for a GST return, as you have correctly pointed out. Always a pain when I have mislaid the GST form they post me. And don't get me started about registering for online services - you flag that you want to register, then you have to RING the buggers to confirm. I have neither the time nor the patience to sit in a 40 minute phone queue!! |

Like I said, the help centre states that it can be completed online via the online services, but I haven't found any mention of it yet. |

I did mine yesterday and have never seen a hard copy apart from the one I printed out on completion of the process. It does involve a phone call to confirm the account when you first set it up on line (from memory they ring you) that makes sense to me otherwise anyone with your IRD number could have fun at your expense. It is IMHO well worth the minimal effort to set up. A wage worker on PAYE does not have to submit a return unless they have another sorce of income. I really like your 20% idea it would save a lot of time but would put a lot of accountants out of work. | CliveM (6007) | ||
| 1209300 | 2011-06-15 07:50:00 | Ok so I spent about 30min on the phone with IRD. Basically the maximum child rebate is $269.10. Anything over this is because of your employer overpaying your PAYE. I sat down and crunched all the numbers, (bit of a pain considering all the tax rates changed during the year!). I'm entitled to $355.55 back. I rang back and confirmed this, oddly both calls only had wait times of 2-3min!!! It was incorrect at $218.00 because the paper run I used to do was still under my name. It was actually transferred to my sister over a year ago but the IRD number was never changed. So because I am no longer on a special tax code, I was required to pay tax on it. A referral has been sent through and this should be amended in the next few days. So I should technically be able to go online in the next few days and complete my PTS and get my $355.55 refund. An IR3 is unnecessary as I only have one source of income or something... Anyway, it should all hopefully be sorted in the next few days and I've found out a lot more about the NZ tax system and how to calculate my tax by myself. |

And then I could never find what I was looking for. That site is incredibly frustrating. |
