2011-06-15 10:03:00 | :D but how the hell do I share say a photo with some mates? What am I missing here? Picassa or Flickr. Would trust my data to anywhere other than my own network, I might be a little paranoid but I do prefer to keep my information where I can get at it locally. I prefer not to use someone else's server farms

2011-06-15 11:26:00 | Will dropbox work within a network without going out on the internet using bandwidth? I wouldn't imagine they would include that feature. Until you asked that, I didn't give any thought to synchronising multiple PCs at each location - you could potentially be using a lot of extra bandwidth if you are working with large files. It is a great system that I have set up for a few of my clients. It makes it so easy to sync files with remote computers.

2011-06-15 23:12:00 | Actually if you look under the general tab in preferences there is an Enable Lan Sync option which I believe means that it wont sync computers on the same subnet, over the internet. | Barnabas (4562) | |
2011-06-15 23:14:00 | Signed up and I hope you get your bonus Vallis, :D but how the hell do I share say a photo with some mates? I dont want them to share my computer, folders, or anything else. I dont want them to synchronise anything either, just look at one photo if they want to. What am I missing here? Under your dropbox folder there is a folder called public. Copy your photo into that folder. Now right click on it and under the dropbox sub menu there is an option to copy public link. Send this link to your friend and they can view the photo. Hope that helps.

2011-06-15 23:34:00 | The files are stored online - so if link up multiple machines to the same Dropbox account - if you load up a bunch of stuff on one machine to your dropbox, next time you log onto other machine that is synced up - you will download the latest uploads. To share an image with your mates etc its quite simple: 1 - copy/paste the image into your Public folder (you can create your own directories in here too) 2 - Right click on the file in the Public folder you wish to share, and select from the Dropbox menu, Copy Public Link. 3 - Give your friends that link (its copied to your clipboard) Easy. They will only get the single file you created the link for, not access to the directory. If you want to grant your friends access to certain directories, you can do so after they also sign up to dropbox and are on your friends list. If you log onto your dropbox admin settings online (via the website) you can choose what friends to share what directories with. By doing this, they can browse your shared directories via their dropbox too. A side note - because dropbox stores all the files online, if your machine is offline, the files are still available, its not using your home bandwidth once you have uploaded the file. It also stores some version history on the files for up to 3 months I believe. Handy for accessing old versions of word documents etc. Enjoy :)

2011-06-16 00:33:00 | I hope you get your bonus Vallis, Well he got mine - and I got 2.25 GB Jen - the first strike was advertising but the second was being helpful to a member (although he should've used PM). Could you cancel that one? Interesting that Dropbox disclosed Vallis' full name to me. Not that it's important. Just an observation on Dropbox's attitude to privacy

2011-06-16 00:43:00 | Certainly a handy storage tool, but can do more using a few tools/scripts. Can automate things, e.g remote computer monitoring (www.labnol.org) (via image desktop snapshots), auto backups (www.labnol.org), and email uploads (www.labnol.org). | kahawai chaser (3545) | |

When it's syncronised you just right click on it, select: Dropbox » Copy public link in the pop-up menu. See here: www.mistywindow.com |

2011-06-20 00:18:00 | ---------------------------------------------- [Moderator's edit - quote from forum rules: 8) No commercial posting, spamming, or otherwise using the forum to promote products and services purely for your own gain. This doesn't stop you recommending products and services to other users, nor does it stop a vendor discussing their products in relation to a post. But users who post purely to promote their business/website may find their threads deleted along with their user ID. I have removed your referral link. Please read the forum rules. I am putting this down to ignorance and not a deliberate flaunting of the forum rules - Jen (Moderator)] I apologize for upsetting anybody, but! I did not "promote products and services purely for your own gain" Please note the "purely". From the response to this thread obviously quite a few members have found my info useful and have benefitted from my referral. When I posted the second link it was in response to a question. I wasn't aware that the first one had been found offensive. Why would I want to read my own intial post? It would have been more helpful to have informed me of your displeasure by PM or some other method which would have been more likely to have reached me. No offense or offence was intended.

2011-06-20 07:44:00 | Hi Vallis, We don't permit affiliate links because people (can) use the forum purely for harnessing 'clicks' to up their tally/benefits etc. Blanket rule. Fair call on the PM, I incorrectly assumed my editing of your original post would have stood out and you would notice this. Cheers.
