1235795 2011-10-08 07:31:00 I keep the Windows/System partition small for quick backups, about 60gb is more than enough for W7. I use a partition D for my work, and usually another for odds and ends. Divert "my documents" to your Data partition, this way you will not lose data if Windows corrupts. I use Acronis Echo to back up with to an external drive. mzee (3324)
1235796 2011-10-08 08:23:00 I have always run 3 partitions - C: for Windows, troubleshooting stuff and little else; D: for all apps and E: for data. This facilitates data backups because it is merely a matter of doing 1 partition and, as others have said, it simplifies clean reinstallation of Windows if that is ever necessary. I also move My Documents to the data folder. Online installers that don't provide an option to select the user's choice of drive and folder are a pain though as they normally go to C:\Programs. 1235797 2011-10-09 07:18:00 My trouble is a lot of the downloaded programs want to go to C:\ without any options. I TRY to keep my C:\ drive for the OS, E:\ for programs, and D:\ for data. PPp (9511)
1235798 2011-10-12 09:48:00 I meant to include in my earlier post that to be able to specify a Drive/folder for an installation it is usually necessary to choose Custom installation instead of Easy or Quick etc. Some progs don't provide a custom option, however. Robin S_ (86)
1235799 2011-10-12 10:00:00 You should change the %PROGRAMFILES% environment variable to point to your new location.
Only the most curmudgeonly software has it hard coded, and you shouldn't be installing stuff from such bad coders anyway... ;).

1235800 2011-10-12 10:23:00 wow nice one fred. never knew that one.

Personally I just have everything whacked onto the C drive. Every user I've ever seen sticks their data on to c drive as that's where it just wants to go.

If I could set it up so that it would install onto a different drive by default (which evidently I can, just didn't know....) then I might be more inclined to do it.
