1209860 2011-06-17 02:12:00 Just cut the head off now as it is starting to flower. Leave the plant and it will sprout more smaller heads.:) Arnie (6624)
1209861 2011-06-17 02:17:00 Thank you! Was expecting some bigger ones :p

Know what is for dinner now.

1209862 2011-06-17 02:28:00 You should cut them before they start to open up (as they are starting to do in your pics). The head should be firm when ready to eat. user (1404)
1209863 2011-06-17 02:35:00 I think commercial growers use some form of chemicals to boost the growth! bk T (215)
1209864 2011-06-17 02:41:00 You MAY be right, but mine ended up bigger than any I have bought from a supermarket, and I did not add anything except compost before planting, and water afterwards. Boosters are not necessary at home.

Possibly Nomad didn't plant them at the right time, or water them sufficiently/regularly, or the soil may have been deficient, or the climate may not be right there.

Or perhaps he has planted those new plants that don't form large heads - you sometimes see them in the supermarket, with a premium price. I can't remember what they are called - broccolini or something? Mainly for stir fries I think.

Whatever, well done Nomad - the broccoli will taste better than one from a supermarket, because you grew it!

1209865 2011-06-17 02:46:00 Tried to grow brocolli in the past, but those caterpillars that eat brassicas moved in and all was gone. Homegrown = awesome! You'll also have the taste of success as well as the taste of great broccoli. mookster1 (15854)

+1

Well done nomad. Home grown veges are so much better and a hell of a lot cheaper.

You can eat them when they are fresh as against several days old so they will taste better for that reason too.

1209868 2011-06-17 03:36:00 It's great hearing that people grow their own veges. At home we only have fruit trees and blackberries. But here at my g/f's place we have a grow a couple of veges - tomatoes and silverbeet, and a few citrus trees. Greg (193)
