1209099 2011-06-14 00:56:00 After a year or two using Dropbox I can't imagine digital life without it . It's been recommended in PC World but it doesn't seem to have had much exposure here on PC World Forums .

I throw stuff in it and it's instantly updated on a server half-way round the world and synchronized (using Delta Sync) on both my computers . It's amazing and it's free . I'd give up Evernote ( . mistywindow . com/data-security/cloud-storage/evernote/" target="_blank">www . mistywindow . com) before I'd give up Dropbox .

If you don't know about Dropbox you're missing an outstanding service .
They've enrolled 25,000,000 users in under 2 years . Read more here ( . mistywindow . com/data-security/cloud-storage/dropbox/" target="_blank">www . mistywindow . com):

If you want to try it you'll get an extra 250MB of free storage if you use my referral link which includes a short demo video:
[edit: referral link removed|

Disclosure of interest; I get an extra 250MB too .

When you have Dropbox you can get referrals too .

:)

It's spectacular stuff .

Alan

1209100 2011-06-14 01:17:00 Does Dropbox have a public folder? Where a member can drop a file and people you don't know can access it if they know where to look or what to look for? (Rather like YouTube except it could be any type of file not just video)

Or does the member have to know the would-be viewers and use email communication with them

Yes to a point. Drop your file into the public directory and then email the download like to someone..

1209102 2011-06-14 02:08:00 2 options for sharing stuff.

1 - in the public folder you can right-click on any item and 'copy public link' and give this to whoever you want to download the content.

2 - if you setup your friends on dropbox, you can setup shared folders for between friends and they can access that folder wherever - as long as they have installed/logged into dropbox.

Awesome app - been using it since beta.

'Email' means you know the recipient. And the recipient will learn your email address

Could you post a link here? To a jpg in your own public folder

That would allow us to see how anonymous the 'public' folder actually is

There you go, link copied from my Public folder.

Cheers.

1209105 2011-06-14 04:06:00 ...link copied from my Public folder

Hmm... I wonder if I'm the right type of person for this;)

Thanks

1209106 2011-06-14 04:55:00 Good grief! Referrals for Africa! I've started a revolution.

As indicated by demonHunter your Public Folder files can only be seen individually via a weblink.

You right-click on a Public Folder file,
click on Dropbox in the pop-up menu,
then select Copy public link.
Paste the link wherever and you're in business.

Like this dl.dropbox.com

Which is the link for "How to use the Public Folder" in my Dropbox.

I think with Evernote (www.mistywindow.com) you can share a whole folder but I haven't done it so I'm not sure.

1209107 2011-06-14 04:56:00 Never been a fan of online storage. I don't like my data being on a server somewhere in the US, just have it all on a 500GB Hard drive. Where I can see it. bot (15449)
1209108 2011-06-14 05:02:00 For members with websites or blogs, Dropbox Public Folder is excellent for managing your images, videos or sound files.
If you edit files, as long as you retain the same filename, they're automatically updated without having to go anywhere near your host or your website.
If your host limits your disc space Dropbox is really useful.
I've elaborated here (www.mistywindow.com).
