1209020 2011-06-13 20:47:00 I don't think I will be around for this

www.dailymail.co.uk

Don't think it will be main stream as most that fly would be put off seeing what goes on outside

1209021 2011-06-13 23:55:00 It's bollox! At lest as it is drawn it's bollox.

There'd have to be greater structural members taking up the viewspace, and without decent insulation (which would ruin the view) it'd be freezing cold when blasting along at altitude.

With more and more emphasis having to go on fuel efficiency we'll likely see a transition to materials that give the best srtength for weight ratio, rather than gimmicks like transparency.

And then there's lightening strikes... would you rather be inside a metal shell, a carbon fibre body, or a transparent body when there's lightening. But hell, it'd look great!

Oh, and crack propogation... at least you could see the failing parts of a transparent fuselage... so maybe there is a place for this!

1209022 2011-06-13 23:56:00 It would make for an interesting flight. mikebartnz (21)

Have you not heard of double/triple glazing.

1209024 2011-06-14 01:33:00 They need to get away from the conventional aircraft body shape first.. How about a Flying Wing?? paulw (1826)
1209025 2011-06-14 02:30:00 It is more likely to occur than a lot of their other ideas. The European taxpayers will gladly back this idea, maybe almost as enthusiastically as they coughed up for a few concords as free give-aways. R2x1 (4628)
1209026 2011-06-14 02:55:00 Who the hell wants to look at the sky in a plane, would much rather have a see thru bottom to look at the ground Gobe1 (6290)

Sometimes the sky can be really beautiful from 36000 feet.

1209028 2011-06-14 04:33:00 ....but, with all that glass and sunshine, can you grow a tomato crop in it?

1209029 2011-06-14 05:20:00 If they can take an acrylic window to the bottom of the deepest ocean trenches they can crack :) this problem but by the time it's on the tarmac will anybody be able to afford to fly? Vallis (8886)
