1462724 2019-07-28 03:36:00 Thought I would shout my gaming system a new hard drive.
Currently has the OS on a 250 EVO
Steam library on another 250 EVO
Plus a 500 mechanical for storage.
The mobo is Asus Z170 Gamer & has provision for a M.2 drive, so thought I'd go that way this time.

M.2 Socket 3, with M Key design, type 2242/2260/2280/22110

Couple of questions:

1/ Looking at a 500GB, any recomendations or ones to steer away from.
2/ Would prefer to have the steam library on that drive.
Would the system be happy running that way, or should the OS be on the M.2 drive.

Thanks

Worst: Fujitsu, Samsung (who do make good screens)

One of these would be my choice just from PBtechs available range:

And while I'd agree with Piroska for mechanical hard drives, for SSDs Samsung is one of the best.

Another good option if you don't want to go to Pbtech

The M2 drive might "use" one of the SATA ports that one of those drives are currently using - check your motherboard manual to see if SATA 0 or 1 is unavailable when using an M2 drive.

dugi this will be used for the main game locations, replacing one of the Samsung 250GB EVO's
So may have to go up a spec or two.
Although that 860 EVO from PB might do the job.
I'll retain the 500GB mechanical drive for storage.

Yes I was thinking the OS would be better on the M.2 drive. Bit of hassle having to reinstall it though.
You are right about it cancelling out one of the sata ports.

1462730 2019-07-29 07:36:00 You could clone your HDD to the M.2. It won't take too long. Bryan (147)
1462731 2019-07-29 08:18:00 Is that wise, other than the OS there is nothing on it I need to save. Driftwood (5551)
1462732 2019-07-29 08:26:00 It gives you a complete copy of the existing OS. Otherwise if it is only the operating system, you could do a clean install of Win10. Just remember to disconnect all the other drives until the new OS is installed and is up and running. Bryan (147)
