1466459 2020-02-11 19:51:00 Yes, I'd like to know some stats on the 1,000 people who have died so far.
were they all old or very young, or with health problems already.
How many of the dead were fit and healthy? (if any)

While I no longer recall the source, the bulk of the deaths have been those aged 70+, by quite a margin, but deaths from every age group have occurred.
Having co-existing or pre-existing issues, particularly lung issues will create a greater risk... smokers can rejoice on that one.

1466461 2020-02-13 01:58:00 Digby I'm more worried about the 5,600 people who have arrived back in NZ, who haven't been tested at the boarder. Today's The Press.

Came in from mainland China of all places, but "she'll be right mate"!.

The condition of patients, according to the World Health Organization (Feb. 7 press conference) and based on 17,000 cases in China, are:

82% mild
15% severe
3% critical

According to the WHO Situation Report no. 7 issued on Jan. 27:

The median age of cases detected outside of China is 45 years, ranging from 2 to 74 years.
71% of cases were male.

A study of 138 hospitalized patients with NCIP found that the median age was 56 years (interquartile range, 42-68; range, 22-92 years) and 75 (54.3%) were men.

Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.
(Which is the case with all flu really)

Doesn't mean most people will die. It's not the Black Plague.
