Was in Wuhan about a week before the lockdown, made it out to Tokyo in time and healthily . - The numbers definitely aren't right, but it seems like less of a case of negative intent (i . e . there's a cover up going on) and more of a case of all of the hospitals are so overloaded that there's just not enough staff to handle it all, let alone keep track of the numbers . A colleague that works at the local office who stayed behind and is in lock down now said that a lot of people have taken to self quarantining when they can't get to the hospital (civilian driving is banned in the city too) but there is still a supply of food and essentials coming into the city, though many supermarket shelves are bare as people rush in to buy as much as possible . - While the lethal rate isn't high based on the government statistics, already it has started mutating and the fact that it spreads so quickly is what has so many concerned . - The hospitals that they built are just for show; *** they live streamed the construction process with 30 diggers on YouTube when 2 bulldozers could have done the work . Don't take them seriously, they're more like army medical camps where they can lock up the sick . A video of one of the builders going around showing how it was more like a prison surfaced on twitter . Even if they can build space for 1000 patients, it's not going to make much of a difference in a city of 11 million (5 million left for spring festival and probably won't come back for a while) . - Everyone is worried, but many have just taken up staying indoors and playing majiang to pass the time . - Bat soup isn't a common thing and most people are sophisticated/modern enough to not eat dangerous wild animals; however there are a few people who do . Unfortunately a few doesn't mean the same thing in China as a few people out of 1 . 4bn could literally be the population of NZ + Aus + UK . The government has taken to almost all out banning dangerous animal consumption but that's something very difficult to police when it comes to Chinese politics . I imagine though, considering how deep health and family issues are in Chinese culture, that people will definitely restrain themselves from now on . - There are rumors and videos leaking out over social media where healthy people are randomly being taken away too for seemingly no reason; I wouldn't put it past the CCP to use this as a time to also politically purge those who they don't like . Terrible, but that's Chinese politics; hopefully one day they will enjoy the same freedoms we do . Just praying for the best, and hoping it all turns out ok . |
