Nor would I want to be identified with maori culture and identity. Digby - I quite agree with you. English is understood and spoken by the majority whereas maori is spoken by a few. |

If I am watching the news in English I expect that to be the language used throughout not to have names changed or phrases in Maori, usually poorly spoken, put in at random. There is already a heavily subsidised Maori channel for those that wish to listen to it. |

Other than traffic there isn't a single thing here that is better. Most of it is worse and it's so damn expensive. All the friendly faces up there, my ex-neighbours all talked to me, shop keepers I haven't seen in over a year etc. As for the maori , this country was originally maori only, so whether many speak it now or not, it's entirely normal....and many don't now because it was banned in schools for a long time...that is the maori speaking their own language to each other. |

Speaking maori in schools was banned by the maori elders because they realised that their children needed to be able to speak English as English was, and still is, the language of New Zealand and if their children were to move on in an English speaking country that was what they needed to be able to do. |

The Native Schools Act (1867) established a national system of secular Maori Village Day-Schools whereby Maori would provide the land and the Government would supply the buildings and teachers. The Act asserted that English should be the only language used, although this was not enforced rigorously until 1900. At the very beginning of the twentieth century, education authorities took a hard line against the Maori language, which was forbidden even in the playground.
