1237786 2011-10-15 22:18:00 I built a pc about 3 months ago,and ever since I put it together, I have been having problems, but nothing I can't live with. It kept shutting off on me with no warning, then it starting shutting down on me, but doing it like I had pressed the shutdown button. Now, most recently, I was sitting here using it, and the screen went black, saying no signal. Ever since I built it, it has always beeped once when it turns on, but then starts on runs fine (unless one of the aforementioned problems struck unexpectedly.) I am studying to be a pc tech, and pretty well know most of what I am doing, but I just can't seem to get these problems fixed. Amy ideas would be greatly appreciated. (btw, pc is running now, but screen still says no input)

pc info
-motherboard- gigabytes 870A-USB3
-CPU- AMD Phenom X6 1100T BE
-gpu- 2x Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 in crossover
-PSU- Kingpin 850w bronze plus, crossover certified
-ram- Kingston HyperX 8gb ddr3 1600
-case- pos I had lying around

1237787 2011-10-15 22:24:00 First thing that comes to mind is over heating - if it over heats the PC will shut down, no warning, and the CPU wont allow it to start again normally until the temp is low enough. (normally the fans will run though )

Another problem may be faulty RAM -- Have you run a memory test ?

Could also be a problem with the Motherboard, PSU ??

it has always beeped once when it turns on Yep -- Thats the POST, its finding all hardware etc and allows to run.

Welcome to PF1 BTW :)

You studying to be a Tech ?? Good fault finding ability is all part of that -- Looks like a good learning curve :D

1237788 2011-10-15 22:37:00 First things that spring to mind:

Heat - an incorrectly installed heatsink/paste application, insufficient cooling/ventilation - What temp is the CPU and GPU running at? What does the BIOS say?
PSU - Have you tried using another PSU? Could be faulty or insufficient power. Earlier PSU's would indicate a W rating however daisy-chaining high drain components would cause to much drain on one line.

Things to try:

Swap the PSU for a known working unit (try to eliminate this one early!)
Check the temperature readouts of the CPU and GPU in the BIOS and in Windows - look for a description and/or higher values than normal. Check heatsink installation and correct application of thermal paste.
Swap the RAM for known working chips.

...just pretty much go through and try and eliminate each component.

Does the computer turn off when a certain program is launched? Does it happen at a specific time of day? Or under certain conditions? - ie hot day, when someone turns a light on/off etc. I once diagnosed a similar computer problem that was traced back to a household wiring problem - whenever the customer turned on their lamp it would cause the PSU to turn off the computer. It was plugged into the same power point.

Have you installed the case switch wiring correctly? Isolate the case and use a jumper to turn on the PC - does it still happen?

Monitor - is the monitor new? Are the latest drivers installed? Is the cable damaged? Is it securely plugged in? Does it work with another monitor? Does it work if plugged into motherboard/Graphics card vise-versa?

Have you set up the BIOS correctly? Is the RAM recognised correctly in Windows?

These are all pretty generic things to try - would be helpful to list things you have tried already.

1237789 2011-10-15 22:57:00 I am using my 40 inch tv as a monitor atm, and my CPU and both gpu's are operating within normal temperatures. I have not ran a ram test, but I can't wither, because the pc is turning on and running like normal, but I have no video output. drecmarr (16586)

So which is it then. You know what you're doing or you need help?

I'd be suspecting power and perhpas heat. You say you've checked for heat, right after it shuts off? What does the BIOS say CPU temp is at that point?
And GPU - whats that say?
What are you doing when it shuts off? Something in particular or is it random.

If temps are OK, I'd be looking at PSU next.

1237791 2011-10-15 23:21:00 Have you got the latest BIOS for your board? Those X6 CPUs often need the latest BIOS to work properly - it could be that if you have an older BIOS, it works but is unstable.

Also, never heard of a "Kingpin" PSU, might be a pile of trash.

1237792 2011-10-15 23:23:00 [U]it has not[/You] been overheating. This last time tho, it lost signal to my monitor, an I couldn't get it to display. I just now took out one of my gpu's, and it fixed my issues so far. Now I just need to find out why it lost its video signal when hooked up in crossover. In reguards to my other problems, I will just monitor my heat a little better, and are if it does shut the whole system down any more, and if there are any anomalies when it does. drecmarr (16586)
1237793 2011-10-15 23:37:00 Taking one of the video cards out would reduce the load on the PSU. Agent_24 (57)
1237794 2011-10-16 00:09:00 I got the pc running in crossfire now. Removed both cards, tried them 1 at a time, then reversed them from their original position, and put both back in in crossfire. Everything seems ok now, but I'm going to try to put it under a heavy load and monitor the cpu and gpu temps here in a bit. Thanks 4 all the suggestions. drecmarr (16586)
