2011-10-12 07:39:00 | I have used Skype about once every month for about 2 years without any problems... Now when I open it up I get a message stating that Skype Home is not available - try later stuff. There are two option buttons, one for phone calls and the other for Video which I normally click on but this is disabled. My web cam is working perfectly and is properly connected. I have Googled this and find that others have had the problem but mainly Mac users. Nothing I have found has helped. I am using XP and Firefox 7.0.1 and have possibly upgraded FF since my last previous OK use of the program. Any thoughts...

2011-10-12 07:52:00 | That can happen sometimes. but it usually comes right. People started to get annoyed with the versions prior to 5.6 (which is the latest version). Skype Home kept coming up when you ran Skype, and people didnt want it. Then in 5.5 (if you use facebook), it wouldnt / didnt work. If you wanted to use FB in Skype (you couldnt log in).l I have a feeling this had something to do with the certificates that were issued to hackers a few mths ago. Because when the updates came out to fix / revoke the certs, FB decided to work in Skype (you could log in). What version of Skype is installed?? Its up to 5.6.0.105. The latest version stops Skype Home from coming up (when you run Skype) | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2011-10-12 08:07:00 | Thanks Speedy for your prompt attention... I should have mentioned that I re-installed it when I found this problem. As such I can't recall which version I had originally, but it would have been a few versions back. The new one I installed is 5.5.0.119. Obviously this made no difference. I also loaded this version into my old laptop but get exactly the same problem. Is it possible to go back and reload an earlier version to see if this helps, and if so where would I find one...?

2011-10-12 10:06:00 | Thanks Speedy, It seems that the downloaded latest versions (5.5.0.1190 were only a "top-up" at about 1 MB. I found a full version of 5.6 which was about 24.5MB and downloaded same, installed it after deleting the old version. After re-establishing my old account I find nothing has changed, the video button is still disabled. The web-cam worked while setting up as it asked for a file picture for my account, this at least worked. At this stage, having had three reloads I am stuffed and will work on it again tomorrow - at least according to Google I am not alone. Cheers and thanks.

2011-10-12 18:32:00 | You dont have to delete anything. You can install over whats already there. You did uninstall 5.5 right?? You didnt just delete its folder?? One reason video wont work is if something like Kaspersky is installed. I know this can block video from working at all / appearing in device manager | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2011-10-12 20:49:00 | Yeah, have tried overloading and deleting with Revo Uninstaller. Same result, re-installs OK but opens with "Skype Home unavailable" and the Video option greyed out and not working. WebCam is shown in Device Manager under Sound Video and Game Controllers. Might have to give this the flick, don't use it very much anyway. cheers
