1210366 2011-06-18 22:25:00 We maybe able to fix it; but,
Is it worth fixing it?
Can we afford it at this present financial difficulties?

1210367 2011-06-19 01:49:00 Someone's too darn clever.

Was a bit disturbed to see Bob rebuilding with the problematic blocks/bricks and mortar.

If anything must be learnt from all this, it's that a stack of dry brittle blocks and mortar is no good at standing up to lateral shaking - the only merit to bricks/blocks is their high compression strength, and their near zero maintenance (in the absence of quakes).

There's just way too much mass (and momentum/inertia) in a stack of blocks to withstand lateral shaking, and certainly in Chch and Wellington their use in future should be seriously limited.

Build a bbq with them by all means, but don't construct a building wall from them!
