| 1210121 | 2011-06-17 22:32:00 | Read here (www.stuff.co.nz). At this stage, the Government hasn't yet made any final decisions on what policies it intends to campaign on in this area. National voted against a private member's bill to restore youth rates. The youth unemployment rate (those aged 15 to 24) increased from 17.2 per cent to 18.8 per cent in the latest figures, the third consecutive increase. I personally think that the return of youth rates would give employers an incentive to employ teenagers and get them into a first job. On the other hand bringing in youth rates could be seen as a transference of the employment problem. Employers could end up replacing older workers with younger cheaper workers. |

That argument against youth rates could be valid in the McDonalds economy we have now, whereby a large number, even a majority of employees, never rise above or have hope of anything better. :groan: |

| 1210123 | 2011-06-18 00:56:00 | A youth rate job/any job is a great way into the work force. Any employer is far more likely to take on a young person for a more responsible position if they have a proven record of being able to get out of bed and turn up for work every day no matter what. I have seen several young relatives end up in good jobs after a year or two at MacDonalds. Sit on the dole doing nothing without a valid excuse and nobody wants to know you. I would not want to work for any outfit who would replace experience for youth for no other reason than money. |
