| 1210398 | 2011-06-21 04:26:00 | Replying to Snork, not jcar - Whoever told you that old story is not a reputable source - probably someone who had read Percy Smith's fictional history about Māori arrival. The Moriori people were migrants from eastern Polynesia, and are of the same original stock as Māori. They settled in Wharekauri or the Chatham Islands and over time developed a distinctly different culture. Having said that, there are traditions amongst Tuhoe that talk of people being here when Tuhoe arrived, and they regarded them as having always been here. I don't know any more than that - I was told this by a Tuhoe kaumātua, and he has since died so I can't check the basis for his belief. |
