1237675	2011-10-16 01:36:00	That thought did cross my mind, and while arguably I may just know what I am doing (I have a bit of electronics background but NOT switchmodes and mains stuff), I'm really not game to open up a PSU and even if I was game, the impossible always happens to me so I would probably make my motherboard into magic toast (or set the house on fire...) Think it may just be better to get a shiny new PSU, if that's what the issue is.	mookster1 (15854)

1237677	2011-10-16 02:57:00	Without some more knowledge of which sensor "Temp3" is - what it should be, and if it's accurate you can't really say much, unfortunately. Speedfan also often accesses sensors which are not connected or are not calibrated and which are completely wrong. On one of my machines I get a "Temp2" which is constantly at -105 (Yes, negative!) Degrees. Your Core (CPU) temperature does apparently get over 80 degrees, though - which seems rather high. Is the CPU heatsink on tightly\correctly? Did you use fresh thermal paste\pad? 1237678	2011-10-16 03:57:00	I didn't build the system so I'm not entirely sure as to how much paste was used on the heatsink, but I'm now test running it with a resource-intensive game to see if it'll make the computer decide to curl its toes. As for temp3 this corresponds to my ending of a mission in Flight Simulator X because I crashed my FA18 Hornet and needed to start again, so I think it should be calibrated. As for gpu1 that is the integrated graphics, which are currently not in use.	mookster1 (15854)

1237680	2011-10-16 22:15:00	I now feel like an idiot because I discovered something really stoopid (and blindingly obvious!) that may just be causing the problem. The CPU has a plastic duct that goes to the outside case, but the outside case is jammed up against under a computer desk! I've since moved the case to under the desk and am running something resource-intensive to see if the system attempts to catch itself on fire again.	mookster1 (15854)

1237682	2011-10-17 23:19:00	Rather than log temps during a game, which is actually a pretty good real world test, you could run prime 95 and watch the temps yourself with realtemp or speedfan to prove the CPU. Although thermal shutdown occurs somwhere in the 90-100 degrees range I'm uncomfortable with any temps above 80 myself. Your PC will unceremoniously turn off if the CPU overheats so that could be it. For the GPU furmark does a good stress test and graphs the temps as it goes. Both of these stress the components more than any normal use so will give you a worst case scenario. Wether it proves to be the temperature or the PSU causing it most people I see posting on here, including myself, would still reccommend replacing the PSU with a quality one. If you decide to take the heatsink off the CPU to check the paste make sure you have some new thermal paste available beforehand, clean both surfaces thoroughly with some isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth or paper towl. Do not touch the surfaces or the paste with your fingers, apply a small bead of paste to the centre of the CPU, attaching the heatsink will spread it sufficiently and usually works better than spreading it yourself. You can find guides on you tube, but ignore any that show the paste being spread, it has been shown this is not the best way.	dugimodo (138)
1237683	2011-10-18 02:28:00	Okay, I've done some more gaming and testing and the temperatures are far more manageable. Unlike when the case was jammed had up against the desk the temperature initially rises to about 60'C and stays there but over time rises to around 80'C at its worst. The computer hasn't spontaneously shut down since I moved the tower case so that may just have been the problem. The manual for my graphics card suggests a PSU with max power rating of at least 450W so it may cause issues in future and will probably be replaced. So yeah; I'll do yet more testing and see if moving the case solved the problem. Thanks for your help, guys! :thanks	mookster1 (15854)
