What is going on down under this 16,000 year old extinct volcano anyway.

Placed the above under: Christchurch. Can we fix it?

Of course scientists would not want to frighten us any more than necessary.

At least the westies lost power for a couple of hours tho.

Lurking.

Another rubbish scare mongering article, there is very little proven relationship between earthquakes triggering volcanic eruptions "especially" extinct volcanoes. But hey people see to love doomsday articles its great for the ratings, negative news sells newspapers.

Map of the quakes positions over time

www.gns.cri.nz

This is interesting.
The first series of quakes were in a west-east line mostly well to the west of Chch
The second set of quakes were also in a west-east line, but stretching past Chch
The most recent quakes are in a line roughly perpendicular to the others (NW to SE), following the coast.

If the quakes continue to follow the West to East trend, then maybe the next big one (assuming there's more to come) will be offshore... then you get the added woes of a possible tsunami.

There is next to no chance of a significant Tsunami in CHCH, for a start the Alpine fault capable of generating such a Tsunami is on land, unlike Japan where it runs roughly 150 KM's off shore. If CHCH was hit by a Tsunami its far more likely to come from the other side of the world and the entire NZ coastline would be at risk.

We eagerly await the outcome of tomorrow's negative outcome of those suburbs to be abandoned to other similar new areas, example Highfield in Marsh Lands and Prestons next to it.

A tsunami would need to be at least 150 to 160 km off the New Brighton foreshore to swamp us. As in Indonesia and Japan.

Lurking.

Ps. another joy germ by another scientist concerning the oceans and fish life in this morning's The Press, this one could be believable.

lurks.

They did say when all this ken ring debacle was going on they had confirmed the moons influence over eruptions near the turn of the century 1900s (but not earthquakes)

The massive forces of the Earth core effect eruptions, not the tiny influence of the moon gravitation field. Earthquakes happen at a much higher level hence don't influence eruptions either.

Ken Ring was hardly the first person to come up with these theories, its been analysed to death.
