1212332 2011-06-26 22:59:00 I've got a briggs & stratton lawnmower. Dunno how old it is - possibly over 5 years, but it's never had an oil change. What sort of engine oil should I use?

Thanks.

1212333 2011-06-26 23:14:00 I just chuck in cheap 20W40, assuming you're talking about a 4 stroke.
The user manuals specify some absurd oil change rate of after every 20 hours of operation.

I suspect this is just so they can claim that the warranty is voided on any engines which develop issues.

If a car with far higher revs and compression can do 10,000km with 4 to 8 cylinders banging away on a single oil change - why can't a lawnmower with one cylinder do better than 20 hours of operation per change?

Sure, they suck a lot of dust, and they lack a fliud filled radiator, but why such an extreme difference?

1212334 2011-06-26 23:58:00 Drain the old oil, keep the oil and throw the B&S away prefect (6291)

1212336 2011-06-27 00:45:00 I recomend that you use the briggs and stratton oil from a mower store. i don't know what it has but my mower runs ok and is 5 years old

1212338 2011-06-27 01:01:00 I have been a serial hater of Briggs and Stratton engines for years. Well before communist chinese junk engines come here B&S was building worse junk.
How about aluminium bores and steel rings, valve seats cut into ally, no replaceable big end shell bearings a great recipe for longevity.
B&S must have hired some **** to design the minimum engine which would still run they did a good job. Dad had the poxy things on the farm for tobacco related machinery.
They were the most unreliable heap of **** engines ever built in the world. He replaced one with a Honda and whoa and behold it just started and run beautifully. All the B&S **** got the heave ho.
One was in a self propelled picking machine, another in a niggling machine for weeding and another in a motorcycle sort of thing which hoed up between the baccy rows.

I agree Honda by far the better engine, quiter too,but considerably more expensive.

I have 2 B&S both trouble free for last 6 years, so not all bad.

1212340 2011-06-27 03:07:00 2x B&S Have been fine for ages, 3rd died after being thrashed as a paddock mower :D

IMO, B&S aren't ALL terrible. Just chuck some oil in that is the right viscosity, not sure what that would be 20W40 i'd say, if its 4 stroke. Do you have to mix the petrol with some other stuff? if so thats a 2 stroke, not a a 4

1212341 2011-06-27 03:12:00 I just put Castrol GTX in mine. I have about 3 litres of it left over from when I use to do my car engine oil changes.
