Swedish car maker Saab, owned by Netherlands-based Swedish Automobile, says it can’t pay wages to employees because it hasn’t yet obtained necessary short-term funding .

I personally won't miss them - but someone has to buy cars that feed mechanic's families and shoes their kids .

If Volvo went out next, I'd still say it's not much of a ripple - they've build soccer mom's cars and station wagons for all the time I've known them, other than their heavy trucks and - well, generally junk that has no longevity and reliability anyway .

Good riddance I say .

1930s designs and archaic engines that require high octane fuel and that European plastic/rubber that either crumbles in the sun, sags in the heat or cracks from outgassing the plasticizers in six months.

Then the poor poor poor quality engine alloys that flow, threads fall out and aluminum that draws under tension - and they are all dinosaurs.

Glad to see 'em both go - wishful thinking by me. I'd rather work on Fiats, Peugeots and Renaults.

I hope you're joking. Any car that was made in the UK was rubbish. It's better now as robots do most of it lol.

As for Saab. Should have gone long ago. Did/do they build planes the way they build cars? At least you can walk when the car breaks down

Saab hasn't had an original car in decades, they are all GM/Holden/Opel with slight differences in bodywork, and a Subaru in there for a mix with a European badge . . .

I am not totally convinced of that association with Saab.

A (deceased) friend had a 1969 Saab 96, and it had a Ford Taunus V4 in it with a 5-speed or 4-speed on the tree and it was the most Michael The Rodent piece of crappola I've ever seen.

A counter-rotating engine, front wheel drive with all sorts of counter-jackshafts and monkey motion before the power got to the wheels and hybrid Lucas/Autolite electronics and Heim joints on the shift linkage and huge lubrication cups on everything.

The clutch operation was an engineer's nightmare and the alloys sucked great big ones.

Yeah - funny though is that he used it for his primary transportation from Anaheim to LAX for many years . In order to shift it, he had to take off his hat to get into 2nd and 4th gear and put it back on to get into 1st and 3rd .

Getting into Reverse meant putting a brick on the clutch pedal to hold it down and going out under the hood and hitting the linkage with a crescent wrench to get the reverse arm to move .

When he needed a new engine for it, I took him to Ford-Powr in Costa Mesa and we bought a stationary sewage pump engine - it's the same engine .
