1211659 2011-06-24 08:57:00 Got an email from orcon lately stating that since TVNZ have changed the way they serve data its too difficult (too costly for orcon to be reasonable I'd guess) for them to zero rate the data.

Anyone else have this with their ISP?

What exactly did TVNZ change? I'd assume you could still add TVNZ servers to white lists unless they have offloaded streaming to a server farm that is hosting other material (eg youtube) that would also get zeroed

1211660 2011-06-24 10:01:00 Snap hasn't said anything.....yet. pine-o-cleen (2955)
1211661 2011-06-24 10:22:00 Yeah but surely they can do some description of reverse dns resolution of the hostnames to zero-rate traffic if TVNZ are passing things off to Akamai etc? Chilling_Silence (9)
1211662 2011-06-26 22:33:00 Sounds like it's been put in the too hard/expensive basket. I'm on Orcon too so that's a bummer since On Demand is the only website I use that uses megabytes of data and not just kilobytes. Siobhan Keogh (16063)

Sounds like you're not using the Internet to its full potential :p

I read somewhere that TVNZ was now using Akamai, and they couldn't detect it's traffic from other data. Not sure how true that is, but that could make sense. If that was the case then Snap may have the same problem. I will wait before changing to Snap to see if they phase it out too, as I use ondemand a lot.

1211665 2011-06-27 21:07:00 Might as well ride the free wave for a month or two though yeah? If you don't use your ISP's provided email address, there's little holding back most home users from switching freely (Unless you're locked in to a contract). Chilling_Silence (9)
1211666 2011-06-27 21:52:00 When I got this email from Orcon I emailed them back and asked them when TiVo was going to be unmetered. Wonder why they never replied?? paulw (1826)
1211667 2011-06-27 22:04:00 That was the last thing keeping me with Orcon, too.

Here's a copy of the email incase anyone is curious.

Changes to O Zone

Hi there,

We have had to make some changes to our O Zone (our service that offers content that doesn’t come off your data cap) that may affect you.

We are sorry to announce, but from 30 June, TVNZ, TVNZ on Demand, the A List, and Biggie will no longer be part of our O Zone.

TVNZ has changed the way it serves content which has made it difficult for us to continue to zero-rate the data. But you can still watch plenty of shows – 5Gb gives you enough data to watch 100 half hour episodes (@300kbps).

BUT, now for the good news, we’ll still be offering great content via the O Zone, and have added new sites, including Trade Me and NZ Herald.

iSKY content is still zero-rated too, so you can watch away without worrying about your data cap.

We’ll also continue to add more sites, and will update our website with the latest additions as they appear (www.orcon.net.nz).

All the best!

The team at Orcon

1211668 2011-06-27 22:56:00 Oh well .. I thought about my special offer I could get a normal Orcon plan and get the free metering.

I was watching Masterchef Masterclass and clocked up 2GB per day :p
