1211260 2011-06-22 21:09:00 I wouldn't.

1)Pay rates for the sort of work I can get is exactly the same as here - except in Aussie dollars.

2)Housing etc costs a lot more there than here.

3)They'd never allow my husband in anyway, due to his long list of medical conditions

4)It's either flooding or on fire

1211262 2011-06-22 23:16:00 Daughter married one of them last Feb. Not a bad bloke - as bad blokes go!

We were talking to them on Skype last night and I had to tell him he looked like a bloody teapot - he was wearing a beanie his mum had knitted for him

1211263 2011-06-23 01:02:00 I was in Melbourne a few weeks ago, here are my thoughts.

They were complaining about....

1. High Cost of living in Aus and rapidly increasing.
2. Property bubble looming
3. Carbon tax
4. Loosing jobs to NZ
5. Immigrants mainly Asian etc.
6. They REALLY hate the current government
7. Crime seemed to feature a bit.
8. The mainstream seem to realise there really is a two speed economy, a lot of comments about the mining industry doing well but not much else.

Odd much of this sounds like NZ complaints lol

I have to admit being in CHCH I did consider jumping the ditch more for a change and getting sick of the NZ media more than any of the earthquakes. The math $$ doesn't work out half as well as many think either.

1. 1hr more "approx" travel to and from work every day and that's not paid.
2. Higher cost of housing to match the house I have here, and we looked at a few. Effectively it may suck up 7-10 years of the the higher pay I would get over there (the difference).
3. Aussies have a real lack of pride in there properties, many of the middle class suburbs look like dumps with un-mowed lawns and rubbish on properties. The neighborhoods look barren to me largely hard to describe.

Ultimately I believe there is a money advantage moving there, but its not 30%, and to me personally its not worth it.

Lastly of course NZ will have a small net population loss (big surprise), CHCH is loosing about 10% of its population and mostly to Aus, that will flatten out and rebound when you look at similar disasters.

1211264 2011-06-23 02:05:00 A few months ago I think it was Campbell did a show about New Zealanders moving to Oz they featured a guy in a manual job saying how much more money he was earning, yet what they didn't pick up on was the fact he was working 10-15 more hours a week over there as well as having to travel 11/2 hours each way to work compared to 20 mins over here.

Yes there is a big difference in wages over there but you might not be better off when you look at the bigger picture

1211265 2011-06-23 02:27:00 Yeah, I have a mate who returned from a trip to Aus, and he reckons economically the place is just as depressed as NZ.

Wonder what their per capita overseas debts run at?
Have they also borrowed heavily enough to curse their next generation or two to being slaves to the state?

That Travel time sounds like Hamilton and Auckland.

1211268 2011-06-23 04:03:00 40 years ago I lived in Cronulla, and it was a pleasant enough drive through Sans Souci etc to the airport. My social circle was all in the coastal eastern suburbs and north. Yes, I enjoyed it especially as it was to become the springboard to a job in the States.

But more recently, I commuted almost weekly to Sydney or Melbourne for the best part of a year, and my job took me to many suburbs away from the coastal areas to visit my clients. My lasting impression is one of endless km after km of dreary Aussie suburbs. And there's nothing more dreary than that.

The average Joe seeking greener pastures won't find it there. Affordability will decree he lives in one of those dreary suburbs. The novelty of Sydney's or Melbourne's CBDs will soon wear off. Outside the CBD, forget it. :2cents:

1211269 2011-06-23 05:14:00 For me (and many others I'd imagine) its a case of leaving town to find work, Not enough positions in wellington to risk it and shes a cold wet hole, and there is no way in hell I'd go back to Auckland.

So, It looks like its back to Brisbane, and with luck I'll double my wages.

Wanganui isn't going to improve work wise, to stay is to have a dead end job on a low wage, or no job at all.
