2011-10-19 00:09:00 | Hey guys, I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP3 on my desktop, but here's the problem I'm running in to I have tried two different CD Drives (One SATA one IDE) Two Hard Drives, (Both Western Digital, one is 40gb, one is 320gb, BOTH IDE on Cable Select Jumper, ONLY drive in the computer) Two different Windows XP Professional SP3 Discs After booting from CD, it goes through the various Setup is Loading filename.whatever, when it finally gets done and says Setup is Loading Windows the screen goes black like its gonna do something then I get a BSOD with the following error: Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF790A8FC, 0xF790A5F8, 0x80827166) I can't get in to windows or do ANYTHING Thanks for the help - Sean

2011-10-19 00:17:00 | Update: I tried switching IDE ribbons and no go, I also tried both sets of IDE ribbons on the other port on the motherboard, I've also tried both ends of both ribbons that plug in to the drive itself. All still give the error. So I don't have a floppy drive... Does that mean TWO hard drives are damaged? Also, The 40 gb drive did not have a jumper on it when I got it, I took a jumper off a 2gb Western Digital Drive that looks old as dirt...is that a problem? I was able to service this 40 gb a few days ago and put Windows XP on it, but since I'm trying it alone on a new system it isn't doing anything.... I mean it kinda sounds like it'd make sense.

2011-10-19 00:30:00 | So apparently, I found a 3rd drive, I put it in, got to the partition tables, deleted the partition, formatted using the NTFS system (quick) and at 100% it BSOD'd AGAIN with the same error... what the heck? did I just brick a third drive? | DragonLord3688 (14939) | |
2011-10-19 01:20:00 | Update again, I used Windows 98 disk to delete the partitions again, tried a FULL format of the disk and it bsod'd again... heres where it gets weird Booting the hard drive with no disk at all in says NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl Alt Del to Restart So I'm about to just toss Windows 7 on here, but I REALLY want XP on this device since its fairly dated.

2011-10-19 01:42:00 | It might be a fault somewhere else, such as RAM. Try running Memtest86+ and see what it comes up with. You may also have a BIOS incompatible with XP, and it may require an update.

2011-10-19 02:20:00 | Set the drives to master rather than cable select and see if it helps. CS is fine in theory but buggy in practice. Edit: +1 for checking RAM, faulty memory can corrupt the files as they copy across and give the illusion of disk errors.
