1211770 2011-06-24 21:47:00 Hi Guys
Like most of us I probably use a lot of AA batteries.

Torches, Remotes, clocks, mice etc

Being money conscious I have used re-chargeables for years.

But I do find that they seem to have a high failure rate.
It hurts when you have to throw away a re-chargeable battery when they have only done 10 re-charges or so.

What do you think ?
Do you use them ?
Do you have problems with them ?
Are some brands better than others ?

1211771 2011-06-24 22:22:00 I mostly use rechargeable's in my headtorch, camera (chosen because it uses AA's and not a battery pack), GPS, caving lights. I don't use rechargeable's in remotes or my mouse as they are low usage and sit around a lot doing nothing well the remotes anyway.

I just generally buy the highest rating I can find at the time and as I do a fair bit of tramping I make sure any thing I need like my headtorch, GPS and camera all run on the same battery size AA

1211772 2011-06-24 22:41:00 I've started using Eneloop batteries.Meant to hold their charge longer than other brands.Dearer of course, but they've been great in my camera, which sits for ages then gets used for quite a few shots at a time, then sits........Others tend to take a couple of shots that way and die. 1211775 2011-06-24 23:50:00 I use rechargeable batteries in my cameras and GPS. Works out cheaper. Torches are something I use occasionally so I always carry a wind up torch in my bag and keep a torch-radio combination in the home in case of emergency. I use non rechargeable batteries in remote controls for TVs and DVD players. Bobh (5192)
1211776 2011-06-25 00:32:00 Digby, I’ve still got Sanyo eneloop’s that are over two years old and as good now as ever.

They’re dear to start with, but cheap in the end.

Also, there was a guy on Trade Me selling them for a good price, but I don’t know if he still is because I haven’t had to buy any. :)

Frankly, I’m surprised that the word on these eneloops hasn’t spread quicker.

1211778 2011-06-25 02:27:00 If you are a heavy user go rechargeables, if not use normal ones.

1211779 2011-06-25 03:54:00 There's batteries, and then there's batteries.

I was helping out at a conference A/V desk and spotted the techs there had some packs of AA's marked in big letters "not for trade" or something along those lines.

Basically these were a higher grade of battery than we poor Joe Average folks get to buy in the shops.

Seems if you have the right contacts you can get the good stuff. The rest of us get the cheap commercial dross.

Personally, I try to use rechargables whenever practical, in the probably misguided belief I'm doing something good. Probably not the cost effective route using rechargables however.

The 9v rechargables have been largely a waste of time. Get miles better service from the disposable variety in the 9v range.
