1213641 2011-06-30 23:28:00 Never knowingly had a swede (of the vegetable variety)... What do they taste like and how do you cook them? johcar (6283)
1213642 2011-07-01 00:07:00 As a kid I never really liked cooked swedes, but I would eat strips of them raw.

Years later a friend told me to add a teaspoon of sugar to the cooked ones.

1213643 2011-07-01 01:13:00 I never ate swedes as a child - was very finicky about some veges and so of course Mr Smithie was never allowed to plant them in later years.

However a year or so ago we were given a couple with the instruction that I had to boil them together with an equal amount of sliced carrots. I did and mashed them together when cooked with plenty of butter and ground pepper and we now thoroughly enjoy them. Even as good as carrots and parsnips mashed together. So try them you might be delighted.

As you would any root vegetable .

They have the texture of pumpkin when cooked, so mashed are quite squishy . Better mixed with something, like potato .

Roasted - fine . Like parsnips .

I make vege souffle often with them .

Taste, well Sthland swedes taste like um, a mix of kumara and sweet corn . You know how fresh corn has that sweetish taste? Same thing .

Akld swedes can be nasty - fibrous and a slight bitter tang - mostly if they have been sitting around for ages perhaps? Or maybe cause they don't grow well here?

They also contain loads of different nutrients, heaps of vitamins etc . Saved many people in WWI and WWII from starvation . Which is probably why a lot of people think they're just animal food now . Too much of anything would put you off I guess .

1213646 2011-07-01 02:07:00 I add swedes to stews as a matter of course. Snorkbox (15764)

1213648 2011-07-01 03:30:00 As a kid I ate them raw, just loved them. That is until one day I ate too much and became very bloated. Would have loved to die at the time, the pain was incredible. Bryan (147)

I wouldn't. Not unless you can get a real one. The ones in supermarkets here and the vege shops are pretty awful.

You can try but if you notice it's fibrous, throw it out, it won't taste nice.

1213650 2011-07-01 05:51:00 I assume the only way to find out if it's fibrous is to cut into it - by which time I have already paid for it... :( johcar (6283)
