1212743 2011-07-01 01:28:00 Voting is compulsory in Australia so don't go there if you don't want to vote.

It was a $10.00 fine for not voting while I was there but it may have gone up for all I know.

1212744 2011-07-01 02:34:00 Compulsory for Australian citizens.

And i never said I didn't want to vote, I fully intend to, My dispute is with ******s who think if you don't follow the prescribed line then you somehow lose your rights.

Yes, it’s a joke because the ones not interested in voting botch up their voting papers so they become informal. In fact, if there were an “Informal Party” they would probably sweep to power.

Because I spend a fair bit of time there, have an Australian address and hold Australian licenses I got a letter from them advising that I wasn’t on the Electoral Roll and setting out the penalties for such a heinous crime. I was going to apologise profusely and ask that I be put on it, but the brother-in-law, (another expat Kiwi), convinced me not to, insisting they lacked a sense of humour in such matters.

No point in blotting my copybook before even arriving I guess. :)

You’re probably right. The Country is full of those that will go to great lengths to achieve nothing, when doing nothing produces the same result.

A totally disproportionate proportion of these people seem to be Politicians and Bureaucrats. ;)

Which suggests the politicians aren't completely stupid.

Or in some cases, are.
