1212895 2011-06-28 08:05:00 I just want to take a moment and congratulate the teams of guys who re-entered the mine with hopes of eventually getting to the bodies inside and bringing closure to the families of those lost.

I hope it all goes well without any more loss of life performing such a difficult and dangerous job.

1212896 2011-06-28 08:13:00 The guys at Mine Rescue should been in charge if this from day 1 not officer Plod who was more interested in the OSH regs than rescuing people.. paulw (1826)

We should make a poll as to what # it gets closed .

I'll start the ball rolling - around #30

All said and done -- best of luck to them.one article (www.odt.co.nz) - bit more info.

And those desperate to conceal the facts will do anything to do so.

Already 90% of what I’ve said previously has been confirmed and it’s now just a matter of the enquiry confirming that a number of miners lost their life waiting to be rescued.

Just like in the Cave Creek enquiry there is a nationwide search to find a "carpet" to sweep the facts under.

Bottom line, Mr Plod blew it.

Sorry, I wasnt about here then. And I didnt post this to start any tension between those who believe what should or should not have been done 9 months ago.

I hope it doesnt turn into a slinging match, and hope a Mod will close it fast if it does. Sorry in advance if it causes any problems.

Thanks for posting the news link WT. Cheers

Interesting Link Wainui.

What's your take on this bit?

"However, "eerily" there was not a great deal of evidence of an explosion, he said.

"Pipes are in place, one or two cables had come away from the roof, but other than that, exactly as we expected."

"Pipes are in place, one or two cables had come away from the roof, but other than that, exactly as we expected." For starters I know sweet FA about mining, what I know could be written on a playing card :)

I'm no expert but I feel unless a person actually knows 100% for certain in these cases, they should shut up. Theres lots of arm chair experts when it comes to matters like this.

No One (yet) knows for sure what and where the damage was done, were they all killed outright in the first explosion, or did they all survive only to be burnt alive or die of hunger etc - No One thats currently alive has been there since the explosion, so no one can say what actually happened - only time will tell.

What's the old saying ;) -- better to shut up and every have one think you are an idiot than open your mouth (or in this case type "expert" remarks here) and remove all doubt.

Anyway, back to the bold text above -- according to the maps shown here from old article (www.nzherald.co.nz) and the comment the original explosion was estimated at 2.5 kilometres from the entrance and "they started setting up a new seal 168 metres in from the entrance", Personally I wouldn't expect to see much damage close to the actual entrance - wait till they get a lot closer, then they will see damage.

168 Metres and 2.5 KM is a big difference.
