1240451 2011-10-28 02:45:00 Spent 6 hrs last night (hopefully) getting rid of heaps of bad nasties incl tdss rootkit from a business PC. No disks for re-doing everything and not a recovery partition situation.

It got picked up early this morning and later I get a ring re a link to the jobsheet database not working. Luckily I had an image early in the piece so I mounted that here and looked at the link.

Believe it or not but the path was Docs & Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\1\Programs\Canon LASER Shot BP-1120\filename.mdb. Whew.

Sh!t says I. That Temp dir would be a bummer. Clearing out temp dirs is good in a nasties clearout!! But, luckily, it was still there in my image.

I emailed the file but they can't use email as Telecom had barred them for sending spam and the reconnect didn't work!

Thank goodness it is near beer o'clock!!

1240452 2011-10-28 03:01:00 :D -- bit like some people "storing" files or folders in the recycle bin because its on their desktop and easy to get to and replace if they need to -- Well Druuuuhhhhhhhhhh

I ask if its OK to empty the recycle bin, and they check to make sure they don't actually want anything, surprising the number of times people actually want to keep what ever it is.
Thank goodness it is near beer o'clock!! x2

Its been one of those days -bit of a story but :badpc: <<< Closest to banging head on wall ;)

1240453 2011-10-28 03:07:00 Know the head banging feeling, for sure!! Like last night I told MBAM to fix the many baddies it found . Re-booted and got a "Invalid or damaged bootable partition" message . Oh, no (and other suitable words!) . Pulled all the wires out and took the box out for a cleaning while I thought of a strategy to fix the MBR . Brought it back and it started up fine . What the . . . . Ran another scanner, fix and reboot . Same boot problem .

Penny slowly starts to drop . Removed USB drive and it reboots . Darn BIOS was set to boot first from USB which is unusual for an old comp . Someone hates me .

It's a bu&&er when that happens.

1240455 2011-10-28 03:41:00 It's the old 'floppy disk still in the drive' all over again...I always make a point of putting USB devices right down the bottom of the list in any builds I do. if someone knows enough to make a bootable USB drive, they also should know enough to go into the BIOS and change the boot order :2cents:

not that it stops this from happening though, I still do it occasionally too. Can cause some serious annoyance, followed by some serious relief, and, depending on who's watching, a bit of :blush: :p

1240456 2011-10-28 08:08:00 Heh, you've got to wonder how many tens of thousands of times worldwide people have wiped C: and formatted and reinstalled to get around a boot problem that was caused by a USB drive being first in the boot order.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

That, and the hard drive at the top. :p
