1240437 2011-10-28 02:42:00 WD IDE 200g. Somehow, playing around with WIN7 and XP I have stuffed a HDD.

In BIOS it is recognised as a GDC something. Acronis sees it as a 200g but with what looks like machine code in the description. Although it is seen, Acronis and WIN7 don't want to know it so I cannot format it or do anything with it.

To all intents and purposes it would seem that it should be thrown away but, up until I messed it up it was working well. It hasn't been dropped, just a software calamity.

Is there any program that I can use to restore it to a formatted disk so that it will be useful? Do you think a local IT Tech might have the tools to fix it?

1240438 2011-10-28 03:08:00 Any sort of bootable partition software should be able to wipe it clean, and create a new partition etc.

Gparted comes to mind, from here (gparted.sourceforge.net) or personally I would use Paragon PartitionManager (www.paragon-software.com), not to sure if the free version allows the creation of a bootable CD or not ??

A firmware update might have the potential to help, but the software for doing the job will probably refuse and say it's not the appropriate drive, given it's borked ID string.
