1214212 2011-07-02 08:28:00 Does anyone know what the differences are between ps3 graphics and pc graphics are?
Lets say a gtx560ti with a nice quad core setup vs a ps3, on the same game title, both running on 1080p, with pc settings set to display similar quality graphics detail as the ps3.
In this scenario, how would they compare, purely in terms of frames per second?
I'm not talking about other pros/cons of console vs pc (cost, convenience, etc), just the graphics performance.

1214213 2011-07-02 08:41:00 Depends on you. Most games aren't natively 1080, they are usually stretched.

IMO, if you play a game like Fallout on a system with a 560TI vs PS3, it'll look better on your PC. You can play at much better quality.
Honestly you can see the damn tiling (or whatever it;s called; big distortion, if you look straight on the ground and "walk" in a straight line) on quite a few games.

And then there is the issue of games being "dumbed-down" visually for playability on consoles.

Three years ago it was great, now not so much. I don't like playing games anymore because they look better on PC for me. I really only use my PS3 for movies etc.

1214214 2011-07-02 08:42:00 I dont know much about the technical details but not many PS3 games are full 1080p so a pc will blow the PS3 away in this area with a decent graphics card and good monitor.

EDIT: Cato beat me to it

1214215 2011-07-02 08:49:00 ok, so lets say the ps3 is gaming at 720p and the pc is set to 1366x768. If you turned down the graphics on the pc to a similar level as the pc, roughly how many frames per second would you get over the ps3's framerate?

1214216 2011-07-02 08:54:00 A pc beats a ps3 normally so lowering the settings on the pc will increase the frame i guess. icow (15313)
1214217 2011-07-02 08:59:00 Oh and tessellation, although I have limited experience with it, is frekkin awesome!
You can't have that on the PS3.

It's disappointing, the entire concept of console gaming is done for me unless it's multiplayer games (as in with people in the same room) but I think you outgrow that in your late teens.

On a 560?
Still way more than a PS3, hell maybe double in some cases.

This is about the performance difference you should see between the PS3 and the 560. Actually it will be higher since the PS3 essentially has a Geforce 7800 in it.

1214219 2011-07-02 09:38:00 If I recall correctly, PS3 graphics hardware is approximately equal to a GeForce 7900 series GPU, give or take a bit. So in theory any modern gaming PC would have much better graphics.

However as all PS3's have the same hardware, some games will be very optimised for the available hardware resources on the PS3. In saying that, PC's (with a good GPU) still have a very big upper hand though.

1214220 2011-07-02 10:05:00 PC will always be better as you can upgrade it.

Your PS3 will always stay the same speed.

PC can do everything else as well, too.

You could argue that the PS3 can run Linux and can also do everything else but it's only got 256MB(?) of RAM which sucks and they disabled it all in firmware now anyway.
