1240621 2011-10-29 20:59:00 Telling people to turn off their Anti-Virus while installing something is a standard phrase used on practically every single program installer known to man.

The truth is that in 99.99999999% of cases you do NOT need to turn your anti-virus off.

My personal observation (out of the thousands of programs I have run\installed over the years) that only one or maybe two ever actually had a problem with the anti-virus being turned on during installation.

Unless you most certainly have an issue, don't bother turning the anti-virus off.

Unless you most certainly have an issue, don't bother turning the anti-virus off. Totally agree there -- hardly if ever had problems with programs installing while the AV is on.

Make sure you only have one AV, if you two they often fight one another. Stick with bitdefender -- remove Nortons.

Could it be that Nortons actually does work when tested by magazines (why would they lie, I would seriously doubt money is being paid for them to do so, that would be fraudulent and dishonest), and to the satisfaction of its users. Yeah it may work in controlled test conditions but in the real world/usage its often very different.

Got a persons PC here right now that I have just finished reinstalling. It had Norton IS 2011,Norton got totally destroyed and the infections ran wild.

Tell that person the AV is good

1240623 2011-10-29 21:53:00 Any antivirus can be defeated if the user tries hard enough, downloading dodgy software, movies, music etc from torrent sites, and visiting porn sites, copying infected data from friends computers etc, and probably clicking through all (the annoying) warnings (and they would never admit that they (or their children) have done any of this :)). Also I usually find that if they do have an antivirus prog, it's the one they got with the machine and it's long expired or never updated with virus definitions. That's the real world. ;) feersumendjinn (64)
1240624 2011-10-30 03:11:00 All the things mentioned are of course true, its a pity the "reviews" don't mention these facts.

That's why I mentioned, lab tests in a controlled environment mean next to nothing -- real world usage / results are more often than not completely different.
