1214940 2011-07-05 01:26:00 Thanks for the info Roscoe p coltrane :thanks:

My pleasure entirely.

I am really sick of the fact that many people in this country know more about American history than they do their own history. It's very sad. Hopefully my small effort will help change that a little bit.

1214941 2011-07-05 01:30:00 @ Roscoe - you need to look further down on that page for a more significant event; the Statute of Westminster.

When NZ finally got around to adopting it in 1947, we really became independent of UK governance (apart from our silly dependence on the chinless wonder who happens to be the monarch of the day).

Personally, I don't think Dominion Day is as significant as either Waitangi Day or 25 November 1947 (when we finally adopted the Statute of Westminster - the last dominion named in the statute to do so). We tugged the forelock to England for far too long, and 1947 was a more significant slash at the apron strings (to mix a few metaphors) than being declared by another country to be a Dominion of the another country's Empire.

Gaining independence was a century long process. As a consequence there is no single significant date to celebrate other than Waitangi Day (and even then, 6 Feb is only the day when one version of the Treaty was signed in one place - the signings on several different sheets went on around the country at numerous places for several months). The rest of the process of getting out from under the British skirts was a piecemeal process that took over a century from the first signing of the Treaty. There are a lot of significant dates (e.g. 1852, 1907, 1947, and 1986), but I would still pick 1947 over Dominion Day if we had to get an alternative to Waitangi Day (and I don't know why we would).

1214942 2011-07-05 01:35:00 I would not mind so much if NZ became a Republic if we could get rid of the Treaty of Waitangi but that will not happen as we have a well established grievance industry .
Agreed .

Then the other thing to consider is how will the Republic work and who will be our first democratically elected leader?
Seeing as the Head of State is the GG who has no real authority, would the PM's office be willing to relinquish any power to the President?
If it's a symbolic position, as I assume it will be, who cares?

And then there's all those apathetic people who won't vote etc . I just put the Republic in the too hard basket .

The MMP concept is so flawed that a single vote does not matter, so again, who cares anyway?

1214943 2011-07-05 01:41:00 Thank you for that, John. Most interesting. I'm always interested in learning more.:thanks

But the point I was really trying to make is that there is too much attention paid to America's Independance Day and not enough is made of our own history. It's really pitiful to see acknowlegement of America's history to the detriment of our own. I was hoping to raise awareness of our own history which is much more relavant than America's history. It seems that I might have achieved that to a small degree. Let's hope more people read your comments. Really appreciated.

1214944 2011-07-05 01:42:00 The head of state is currently the GG as you say but us people don't get to elect the GG do we?

Under a Republic the Prime Minister is not relevant. You have not thought it through.

I disagree.

I think the PM would keep his role, and have a President would take over the role of the GG.
Like they have in India and Italy, for instance, as opposed to say France.
Because it would be too costly to make enough legal changes to move the office over to the President, when you can literally have a drop in replacement for the GG.

I would vote that way Ter..

Interesting that we have to ask permission of the politicians, I thought they were our servants, not the other way around.?

1214949 2011-07-05 05:23:00 The signing of the treaty was a fairly long drawn-out process, but the sighing is far from over even yet. R2x1 (4628)
