1214678 2011-07-05 02:08:00 In my experience Netbooks have cramped keyboards (OK, if you've got little hands and narrow shoulders) and the screens are a PITA to do anything on.

I use a Lenovo T400 at work - I hate it. The keyboard has the Fn key where the Ctrl key normally is (on every other keyboard I have ever used), so I have to look at the keyboard whenever I try to copy/paste.

Sony's are the Apple's of the PC world: "bling-y" and overpriced (generally-speaking).

ASUS and Toshiba are the brands to look at - statistics prove they have the best overall reliability and they both have excellent build quality.

Whatever you end up with, make sure you uninstall whatever antivirus program comes pre-installed (usually Norton) and install Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

1214679 2011-07-05 04:19:00 I doubt you'd go wrong with a 13" macbook pro or lenovo x220 (and perhaps elitebook 2560p when they become available). They are best ultraportable performance notebooks. They're well built and will last years even if treated relatively roughly (perhaps macbook less so).

The macbook has an optical drive, but the lenovo has an IPS screen so nothing else (not even macbooks) comes close in image quality.

1214680 2011-07-05 07:11:00 Thanks all, will definitely look cosset at Asuss I think. The Sony look nice but I think you are paying for the bling.

1214681 2011-07-05 07:22:00 I believe a 13 inch MacBook Pro would be a good option for school - It would be good to also learn the Mac OS. Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is a very good durable notebook. sahilcc7 (15483)

Definitely like the look of these, does anyone know if there is somewhere to actually get one in her hands to see if she likes it?

1214684 2011-07-06 10:45:00 laptop for daughter:-

Needs to be portable (plans on taking it to Uni most days of the week)

Prefers something around the 13-14" widescreen not necessary

General use with Office and browsing, general multimedia (mainly music)

Good battery life

Does not need to be a fashion statement :)

Not looking for budget, happy to pay for a quality build and support that will last a while.

There's a shop that specifically sells to uni students (lapshop.co.nz) - have you had a look at what's on there?

1214685 2011-07-06 10:48:00 Low end & mid-range Toshibas are no better than anything else in their price range. HP Probooks are usually really good & the Probook 4520S is really cheap from the wholesaler right now, so you will probably find some good deals on it.

I don't like the touchpad on that model, but it seems to be solidly built & has good specs.

1214686 2011-07-06 11:01:00 Thinkpad T series, not as small as the X series. A lot of IT professionals use this laptop. Bit more than the usual shops thou ...

Not sure who have them in a showroom, many are internet companies who order/ship on demand. Know a friend who works in a MNC or a large govt dept - cos they probably be using them :p

Oh yeah the Laptop Company may have them. Maybe Turners Computer auctions? They should go to them quite regularly given they are high on the corporate's list.
