| 1215101 | 2011-07-05 20:09:00 | The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that Cisco Systems is set to supply networking technology that will help run a new surveillance system in China, and that HP is expected to bid on the project as well . The city of Chongqing will install as many as 500,000 video cameras at intersections, parks and neighborhoods covering 400 square miles prompting concerns that the effort, which is being presented as a way to prevent crime, will increase the Chinese governments control over its citizens . Cisco Systems, a Silicon Valley giant that is facing challenges from seemingly everywhere its own back yard (Hewlett-Packard and others), China (Huawei), and shareholders (Ralph Nader) might not be overly concerned about its social conscience at the moment . It might instead be trying to do everything it can to achieve growth . A Cisco spokesman did tell the WSJ that the San Jose company hasnt sold video cameras or video-surveillance solutions in any of our public infrastructure projects in China . |
