1215101 2011-07-05 20:09:00 The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that Cisco Systems is set to supply networking technology that will help run a new surveillance system in China, and that HP is expected to bid on the project as well .

The city of Chongqing will install as many as 500,000 video cameras at intersections, parks and neighborhoods covering 400 square miles — prompting concerns that the effort, which is being presented as a way to prevent crime, will increase the Chinese government’s control over its citizens .

Cisco Systems, a Silicon Valley giant that is facing challenges from seemingly everywhere — its own back yard (Hewlett-Packard and others), China (Huawei), and shareholders (Ralph Nader) — might not be overly concerned about its social conscience at the moment . It might instead be trying to do everything it can to achieve growth .

A Cisco spokesman did tell the WSJ that the San Jose company “hasn’t sold video cameras or video-surveillance solutions in any of our public infrastructure projects in China .
