1214667 2011-07-04 10:01:00 I would value some input on peoples recommendations for a laptop for daughter:-

Needs to be portable (plans on taking it to Uni most days of the week)

Prefers something around the 13-14" widescreen not necessary

General use with Office and browsing, general multimedia (mainly music)

Good battery life

Does not need to be a fashion statement :)

Not looking for budget, happy to pay for a quality build and support that will last a while.

Had a look around the shops at the weekend and the majority seem to be 15"+ and widescreen (some of them looked even large for a desktop). The Macs look ok but prefer not to go there and indeed probably the closest we looked at was a Sony SB series. Just had a look at Dell online and not a lot I like the look of when reading the reviews and Lenovo an option as well, but there is so many out there I thought I would ask here.

thanks

1214668 2011-07-04 10:09:00 Dell XPS 15 (www.dell.com) is what I would get. ronyville (10611)
1214669 2011-07-04 10:12:00 The Asus U36JC looks quite nice, but I don't think it's available here yet. Thin, light, and not too pricey. somebody (208)

1214672 2011-07-04 10:36:00 Does it have to be a laptop?

Netbook perhaps?

I second that, probably the best 13" in a reasonable price range.

I believe this is the same machine (although it's hard to tell, it lacks a model no): www.jbhifi.co.nz

(although, I must say the older model with the first gen i-core chips, was much more aesthetically pleasing, at least for me)

Edit: Perhaps the Samsung 9 series? It looks great but it isn't cheap.

1214675 2011-07-04 10:53:00 I recently bought a Toshiba R830 for a client, lovely light machine, very slick with i5 processor. My second choice would probably be one of the better HP Probooks.

If you're on a limited budget, for all it is being used for, probably an Acer would be as good as anything.

In some respects, what you are prepared to spend is what you're going to get (within reason, the more you spend, the better it will be), I repeat, "within reason", as I cant justify anthing over about $2,500 as I dont see any benefits or improvements for the average user.

Personally I dont like Dells or would recommend one to my clients, but each to his/her own.

My 2cents worth, good luck Erger.

1214676 2011-07-04 11:39:00 Don't buy dell or cheap HP's. That's just asking for trouble. I'd only ever buy Apple, Asus, maybe Sony or Toshiba laptops. Solid performance and quality can be expected from any of the brands listed above. Also don't buy an i7 if you're after battery life.
