2011-11-05 01:32:00 | My Z68 MB is working fine but I'm having trouble with a USB3 portable HDD: When I power up, the HDD does not appear in Explorer. A message says 'Unknown Device' and then adds 'Installation Successful' but does not close. A rescan in Disc Management does not bring it up. Reconnecting the drive does bring it up. (and without any obvious driver installation). It seems to work at USB3 speeds (around 77 MB/s) It might seem that the solution is to reconnect it each time but it's awkward to get at on the floor. I have an eye blood-vessel problem which is aggravated by head-down activity. The drive comes up OK if I connect it to a USB2 port (using the same cable). It also safely ejects from the USB2 port whereas it doesn't from the USB3 port. Any suggestions? I have updated the BIOS to the latest (F8), also applied most Windows updates. MB is GA-Z68XP-UD3 Rev1.0. Drive is WD Passport 1TB USB3, model 0740

2011-11-07 02:01:00 | Have you checked for driver updates for your USB3 controller? Since USB3 is only recently being used, expect many issues and driver updates released to fix them.

2011-11-07 20:45:00 | No I haven't done that... I am a bit confused by what got installed. On first plug-in there were 3 installations: - mass storage device (I presume this is the USB2 driver) - My Passport 0740 USB device - WD SES USB device The confusing thing is that the '0740' driver was already in the machine. It did not need connection to the internet. I only connected to the internet when the 3rd item couldn't be found. I am also confused why two drivers are required for USB3 If the '0740' driver was part of a Windows update it should already be fresh. Perhaps it wasn't part of Windows but was on the device itself? ie, device connects via USB2 and retrieves a driver for USB3. Does that sort of thing happen?

2011-11-07 23:39:00 | No, those three things are for the drive itself. Mass storage device is a generic device class for pretty much anything that stores data and uses USB - and Windows typically comes with drivers inbuilt. The other two will relate to the USB-SATA bridge\controller chip in the enclosure and likely the actual drive itself. According to Gigabyte, your motherboard uses the Etron EJ168 controller for providing USB3.0 This is the device I would check for new drivers for. The latest ones are here: www.gigabyte.com (v105, which matches with the number on Etron's site, although they don't actually seem to have a download link) www.etron.com

2011-11-08 01:25:00 | Thanks - it's very promising. Present USB3 driver is v101 dated May. The new one is v105 dated August I've downloaded it and will try it soonest. (The Etron downloads seem to be of 'information', either HTML or pdf. Not anything useful :) )

2011-11-08 02:19:00 | Driver installation worked fine but problem remains roughly the same. Ther USB3 drive still doesn't work from power up unless I reconnect it, but it now safely ejects. It didn't before. I note that on start-up the USB3 drive behaves differently from another WD USB2 drive I have. The USB2 drive flashes and pauses a lot, eventually becoming steady. The USB3 drive flashes when the power is turned on at the wall and then goes steady (before the computer is turned on). It does not flash at all when I turn the computer on. My guess is that the driver update was to fix safe ejecting. Portable drives are normally used with laptops where it's easy to connect and reconnect. The problem I'm having might not have been reported yet. I will keep a watch on the driver situation... Thanks for your help

2011-11-08 02:41:00 | Maybe contact Gigabyte about the problem then? If you're lucky they'll forward the issue to Etron and release a driver to fix it. Or you could contact Western Digital and see if they can help.

2011-11-08 02:47:00 | Have you installed the latest Etron driver yet? Did you install Intel Rapid storage and / or the Marvell sata driver as well? | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2011-11-08 07:00:00 | Have you installed the latest Etron driver yet? Did you install Intel Rapid storage and / or the Marvell sata driver as well? Yes - it was the Etron driver I was referring to above (that I updated and it didn't solve the problem) Also 'yes' about installing Intel Rapid Storage. It's driver was on the MB disc. I haven't updated any MB driver other the Etron found by Agent_24. Should I? I've also taken Agent_24's advice and contacted Western Digital. I have a support code etc. But my problem is trivial compared with the problems listed on their forum. I might invest in a header cable + DVD-drive bay USB3 bracket

2011-11-09 20:16:00 | Well, WD quite helpful and gave me a link to do a firmware update (as opposed to USB driver update). This was quite easy but didn't solve the problem. I might touch them for a longer cable (eg 1m) which would be OK for me (Had 79 critical events overnight :horrified All caused by Win7 WindowsSearchIndexer trying to index the content on an XP boot disc I had connected)
